Trichy College Empowers Students with Moringa Product Training Under National Rural Scheme

St Joseph's College in Trichy conducted a comprehensive training program on Friday, focusing on value-added products derived from moringa trees. This initiative was held at Nagamangalam village as part of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan scheme, a program overseen by the Union Ministry of Education that aims to connect higher educational institutions with rural communities.

Program Objectives and Hands-On Learning

The primary goal of the training was to raise awareness among college students about the consumption and production of healthy food items from moringa. Organized by the extension department, the event provided students with practical, hands-on experience in creating moringa-based products.

During the session, participants actively engaged in producing moringa leaf powder and moringa soup powder. The training covered detailed preparatory methods for a variety of value-added products, including:

  • Moringa oil
  • Moringa soap
  • Moringa seed powder
  • Moringa thokku
  • Moringa tea

Educational Insights and Entrepreneurial Focus

Faculty members from the botany department contributed by explaining the nutritive values of different parts of the moringa tree, such as leaves, flowers, and gums. This enhanced the students' understanding of the potential health benefits and diverse applications of moringa in daily life.

Organizers emphasized that the program equipped students with practical skills and exposure, including a tour of a herbal garden. This experience is designed to inspire entrepreneurial ventures, enabling participants to produce and market value-added moringa products effectively.

The training not only promoted wellness through natural products but also aligned with broader educational goals under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, fostering community engagement and sustainable development in rural areas.
