Australia's Victoria University has received formal approval from Indian authorities to establish a campus in Gurugram, with student intake set to begin next month, according to a Tribune News Service report dated July 10, 2026.
Approval and Timeline
The university obtained the necessary clearance from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Ministry of Education, becoming one of the first foreign universities to set up a campus in India under the National Education Policy 2020. The Gurugram campus will start admitting students from August 2026.
Victoria University's entry follows the UGC's regulations for setting up and operating campuses of foreign universities in India, notified in 2023. The university plans to offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs initially.
Programs and Infrastructure
Victoria University will offer courses in business, information technology, engineering, and health sciences. The campus is located in Sector 45, Gurugram, and will have state-of-the-art facilities including smart classrooms, laboratories, and a library. The university aims to enroll around 500 students in the first year.
"We are thrilled to receive this approval and look forward to providing world-class education to Indian students," said a Victoria University spokesperson. "Our programs will combine Australian academic standards with local industry needs."
Impact on Indian Higher Education
This development is a significant milestone for India's higher education sector, as it opens doors for more foreign universities to set up campuses. It aligns with the government's goal to internationalize education and reduce the outflow of students abroad. Currently, over 1.3 million Indian students study overseas, spending an estimated $30 billion annually.
Experts believe that the presence of foreign universities in India will enhance competition, improve quality, and provide students with global qualifications at lower costs. "This is a game-changer for Indian education," said an education analyst. "Students can now access international degrees without leaving the country."
Future Plans
Victoria University plans to expand its campus over the next five years, targeting an enrollment of 5,000 students. It will also collaborate with Indian companies for research and internships. The university's entry is expected to pave the way for other foreign institutions, including those from the UK, US, and Canada, to follow suit.
