Government Teacher in Barmer Suspended Over Alleged Harassment and Threats

A government schoolteacher in Barmer district, Rajasthan, was suspended on Tuesday following serious allegations from female colleagues of sending obscene messages and issuing rape and death threats. The incident has sparked outrage and led to swift administrative action.

Complaint Details and Allegations

According to official reports, four female teachers from two government schools in Barmer approached the district administration on Monday. They submitted a written complaint to the Barmer District Collector, accompanied by screenshots of WhatsApp chats as evidence. The complainants alleged that the accused teacher engaged in sustained harassment, including sending obscene messages, making late-night calls, and posting threatening content in a school WhatsApp group.

One of the most severe allegations involved a threat to abduct a teacher from her home, rape her, and kill her, which caused significant mental distress among the victims. The female teachers further claimed that a female principal and other staff members at another school were also subjected to similar abusive and harassing messages through digital platforms.

Administrative Response and Action Taken

Additional District Magistrate Rajendra Singh Chandawat confirmed that three to four teachers filed the complaint with supporting screenshots. He stated that the matter was heard promptly, and the education department was instructed to take immediate action. In response, District Education Officer (Elementary) Krishna Singh suspended the accused teacher and transferred his headquarters to the Sedwa BEEO office.

A departmental inquiry has been initiated to investigate the allegations thoroughly. The accused teacher was reportedly involved in running a teachers' association under his own name, adding complexity to the case. The swift suspension underscores the administration's commitment to addressing harassment in educational institutions and ensuring a safe environment for staff.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about workplace safety and digital harassment in schools, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of anti-harassment policies and better support systems for victims in the education sector.
