The school education department in Chennai has requested inputs from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to evaluate the possibility of heatwave-like conditions during the first week of June. Based on the meteorological data, a discussion will be held with Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to consider postponing the reopening date of schools. This was announced by school education minister Rajmohan during a press conference on Monday.
Background of the Decision
The minister's statement comes in response to multiple representations from school associations and education activists who have urged the government to delay the reopening from June 1 to June 8. The potential postponement aims to safeguard students from extreme heat conditions.
Awareness Initiatives for Students
When questioned about sensitizing students to child helplines, Minister Rajmohan revealed that the newly launched textbooks for classes I to III, aligned with the state education policy, include helpline numbers on the first few pages to enhance awareness. Additionally, he stated that debates, special classes, and orientation sessions focused on fostering a scientific temper among children will be organized throughout the academic year.
Addressing Teacher Grievances
Regarding the long-standing demands of part-time and secondary grade teachers, who staged statewide protests earlier this year before the elections, and the issue of unfilled teacher vacancies in elementary and middle schools, the minister announced that a special grievance meeting will be convened to compile their concerns. He said, “We will assess what can be done in each case. Some of these demands have administrative concerns, while others are legal. We will tabulate the concerns and work for teachers’ welfare. This government stands by students, teachers and parents – in that order.”
Appointment of Tailoring Teachers
Earlier in the day, the minister handed over appointment orders to six teachers who were selected as tailoring teachers through the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB).
