Dehradun Teachers Temporarily Halt Agitation Following MLA's Apology and Government SOP
In a significant development, teachers in Dehradun have temporarily called off their four-day-long agitation on Wednesday. This decision came after BJP MLA from Raipur, Umesh Kumar Kau, issued a public apology for the assault on primary education director, Ajay Kumar Naudiyal. Concurrently, the government released a standard operating procedure (SOP) designed to ensure the safety of public employees in government offices.
Government Assurances and Pending Demands
The state government has also provided assurances that the case filed against education department personnel will be withdrawn. Mukesh Bahuguna, the general secretary of the teachers' association, emphasized that while the SOP is now in place, the withdrawal of the case remains their only pending demand. "If assurances are not fulfilled or similar incidents recur, we will resume the agitation on a larger scale," Bahuguna stated firmly, highlighting the conditional nature of the protest suspension.
MLA's Apology and Context of the Incident
At a press conference, MLA Umesh Kumar Kau described the incident as "unfortunate" and expressed deep regret. "We hold immense respect for all officials. The education department has always had our support, and we have received their cooperation in the past," Kau said. He explained that the dispute originated over adding a prefix to a school name, for which a family had donated 1.5 beegha of land. "I tried to intervene, but it escalated, and I am deeply apologetic. My apologies to all stakeholders," he added, noting that Naudiyal was "like a brother" to him and that his injuries were no different from those sustained by the MLA.
Background of the Assault and Protest Demands
The incident occurred on February 21, when a disagreement over the renaming of an aided school in Raipur escalated into an alleged assault in the presence of the MLA. FIRs were lodged by both parties involved. Teachers condemned the assault on a sitting official inside his office, terming it an "insult to the sanctity of the post." Naudiyal sustained facial injuries during the scuffle.
In response, teachers initiated protests outside the education directorate, demanding a public apology, withdrawal of the case against department personnel, and a formal SOP to ensure officials' safety. During the agitation, teachers wore black armbands while working, and administrative functions were largely disrupted. A complete boycott was avoided due to the ongoing board examinations, which required minimal disruption to educational activities.

The temporary suspension of the agitation marks a critical step toward resolving the conflict, but it remains contingent on the government fulfilling its promises.
