Delhi Directorate of Education Launches Online Admissions for EWS, DG, and CWSN Categories for 2026-27 Academic Session
The Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi, has officially commenced the online admission process for children belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Disadvantaged Group (DG), and Children with Special Needs (CWSN) categories for the upcoming academic session 2026–27. This initiative is a significant step towards ensuring equitable access to quality education for underprivileged and marginalized communities in the national capital.
Comprehensive Admission Process for Entry-Level Classes
The admission process specifically targets entry-level classes, which include Pre-school or Nursery, Pre-primary or KG, and Primary or Class 1. This comprehensive coverage applies to all private unaided recognized schools across Delhi, with the notable exception of minority institutions. The entire procedure is being conducted through a fully computerized online system, streamlining the application process for parents and guardians.
Parents or legal guardians are required to submit their applications exclusively through the official online portal designated by the Directorate. This digital approach aims to enhance transparency, reduce paperwork, and minimize potential errors or discrepancies during the submission phase.
Mandatory Seat Reservation Under Right to Education Act
In strict adherence to Section 12(1)(c) of the Right to Education Act, 2009, all participating private schools are mandated to reserve 25 percent of their total seats at the entry level for eligible candidates from these categories. This provision ensures that children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds receive free education up to the elementary level, thereby promoting inclusivity and social equity within the education system.
Admission Schedule and Key Dates for 2026
The online registration window officially opened on February 21, 2026, and will remain active until March 16, 2026. Prospective applicants are strongly advised to complete and submit their forms within this timeframe to avoid missing out on this crucial opportunity.
The date for the first computerized draw of lots, which will determine seat allotments, will be announced separately by the Directorate. The allotment process will be conducted through a computerized lottery system to ensure fairness and impartiality. Once a school is allotted to a child, no changes or transfers will be permitted under any circumstances.
Detailed Eligibility Criteria and Reservation Structure
Of the total 25 percent reserved seats, a detailed breakdown allocates 22 percent specifically for EWS and DG applicants, while the remaining 3 percent are earmarked exclusively for children with disabilities as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016.
Eligibility for EWS Category: Families must have an annual income below ₹5 lakh or possess valid Below Poverty Line (BPL) or Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) cards issued within Delhi.
Eligibility for DG Category: This includes children from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC) non-creamy layer, orphans, transgender children, and those living with or affected by HIV.
Eligibility for CWSN Category: Applicants must provide a valid disability certificate issued by a government hospital to qualify under this category.
It is imperative to note that only one application per child is permitted. Multiple entries for the same child will result in immediate cancellation of all applications. Furthermore, this benefit can be availed only once at the entry level, preventing any potential misuse or duplication.
Age Criteria and Required Documentation
Age limits for admission are calculated as on March 31, 2026. The specific age brackets are as follows:
- Nursery: Children must be between 3 and 5 years old.
- KG: Children must be between 4 and 6 years old.
- Class 1: Children must be between 5 and 7 years old.
Relaxed age limits are applicable for CWSN applicants, providing necessary flexibility for children with special needs.
Applicants must upload several crucial documents during the online registration process. These include:
- Proof of date of birth (such as a birth certificate).
- Proof of residence in Delhi.
- Income certificate for EWS applicants (must be issued before the last date of application).
- Category certificate where applicable (for DG or CWSN).
- A recent photograph of the child.
Income certificates must be issued prior to the application deadline to be considered valid. Any documents submitted after this date will not be accepted.
Monitoring, Grievance Support, and Strict Compliance
To ensure smooth implementation and address any concerns, the Directorate has established a district-level monitoring cell and a dedicated helpdesk. Parents and guardians can seek assistance and resolve queries through these channels. Additionally, a helpline number (9818154069) is operational between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM on all working days.
The Directorate has issued strict directives for compliance with all admission guidelines. Schools are explicitly prohibited from demanding any form of capitation fee during the admission process. Any applications found to contain incorrect information or forged documents will be summarily cancelled, and appropriate action may be taken against the responsible parties.
This initiative represents a concerted effort by the Delhi government to bridge educational gaps and provide equal opportunities for all children, regardless of their socio-economic background or physical abilities. Parents are encouraged to utilize the online portal efficiently and adhere to all deadlines to secure admission for their children in the 2026–27 academic session.
