Gajapati School Gate Collapse Claims Lives of Two Minor Girls, District Administration Launches Inquiry
In a tragic incident that has shocked the community, two minor girls lost their lives following the collapse of an entrance gate and its supporting column at a government-run primary school in Rubudisingh village, located in the Nuagada block of Gajapati district, Odisha. The devastating event occurred on Wednesday, prompting immediate action from local authorities. In response, the school declared a holiday on Thursday as a mark of respect and tribute to the deceased students.
Immediate Response and Preliminary Inquiry Initiated
District officials swiftly moved into action on Thursday morning to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the mishap. A team led by District Education Officer (DEO) Mayadhar Sahu and Sub-Collector of Paralakhemundi Anup Panda, along with several other officers, visited the school site. Their investigation involved detailed discussions with school teachers and local villagers to gather firsthand accounts of the incident. Additionally, the officers paid visits to the homes of the deceased to offer condolences and assess the situation.
During these visits, the administration provided immediate financial assistance to the grieving families. From the District Red Cross Fund, Rs 20,000 was handed over to each family. Furthermore, they were informed about the ex-gratia payment of Rs 3 lakh per victim, which was announced by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi as part of the state's support measures.

The victims have been identified as Beikylesh Raita, a 10-year-old student in Class V, and Edannti Raita, a 9-year-old student in Class IV. According to DEO Mayadhar Sahu, the preliminary inquiry has revealed that the tragic incident took place after the school had closed for the day at 10:30 am. The girls had initially returned home but came back to the school premises to play, where they were struck by the collapsing gate.
Seto Raika, the in-charge headmaster of the 54-year-old primary school, provided crucial insights into the possible cause of the collapse. He stated that one of the columns supporting the gate had been damaged after being hit by a vehicle used by a contractor. This contractor is currently engaged in constructing an additional classroom for the school, which has 47 students enrolled from Class I to V. Currently, all classes are being conducted in a single room due to ongoing construction work.

The preliminary inquiry conducted by the district administration is a precursor to a more comprehensive investigation that will be carried out by the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (Southern Range). Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has ordered this higher-level inquiry to ensure a thorough examination of the incident and to prevent such tragedies in the future. DEO Mayadhar Sahu confirmed that the findings from the preliminary inquiry will be compiled into a report and submitted to the district collector promptly for further action.
