Gujarat Education Department Unveils Massive Recruitment Drive for 11,000 Primary Teachers
The Gujarat State Education Department has officially announced a significant recruitment initiative aimed at filling approximately 11,000 positions for vidyasahayaks, or primary teachers, in government-run primary schools covering Classes 1 to 5. This extensive drive is specifically targeted at Gujarati-medium schools under the jurisdiction of district and municipal primary education committees, offering a substantial opportunity for aspiring educators across the state.
Recruitment Details and Application Process
According to a notification released by the Gujarat State Primary Education Selection Committee, eligible candidates can begin their online registration for this recruitment process starting from April 15, with the application window closing on April 24. To ensure accessibility and proper documentation, applicants are required to submit their forms at designated acceptance centres. The entire selection procedure will be conducted online to enhance transparency and operational efficiency, with merit serving as the sole criterion for selection.
Once the merit list is finalized, candidates will be allocated to districts based on the availability of vacancies and their stated preferences, ensuring a fair and systematic distribution of teaching resources.
Eligibility Criteria and Candidate Provisions
This recruitment drive is particularly beneficial for individuals who have successfully cleared the Teacher Eligibility Test-1 (TET-1). In a notable provision, candidates who are currently in their final year of the Diploma in Elementary Education (DElEd) program are also eligible to apply. This allowance enables aspiring teachers to participate in the recruitment process even before completing their final certification, thereby streamlining their entry into the teaching profession.
Background and Scale of the Recruitment Initiative
The recruitment effort addresses a critical shortage of primary teachers across various districts in Gujarat. Out of the total 11,000 vacancies, 5,000 positions are pending recruitments from 2025, while 6,000 were approved for 2026 as part of the state government's comprehensive 10-year recruitment calendar. This makes the current drive one of the largest recruitment campaigns for primary teachers in recent years, reflecting the state's commitment to strengthening its educational infrastructure.
In comparison, the state successfully completed recruitments for 3,852 teaching posts for Classes 1 to 8 across various mediums in 2024. Additionally, a special recruitment drive in 2025 filled 2,500 posts specifically in the Kutch district, demonstrating ongoing efforts to address regional needs.
Impact and Future Prospects
Education officials have emphasized that the recruitment process will be executed in a time-bound and transparent manner, with the goal of filling vacant positions at the earliest opportunity. Experts in the education sector believe that this large-scale hiring initiative will significantly improve the quality of primary education by reducing teacher shortages and fostering a more robust academic environment in schools throughout Gujarat.
Concurrently, the Primary Education Department has resumed the approval process for opening new private primary schools and expanding classes in existing institutions for the academic year commencing in June 2026. Following a notification issued on December 4, 2025, which saw limited applications, the department has extended the opportunity for institutions to submit online applications between April 8 and April 15, further supporting educational growth in the state.
