Gujarati Language Exam Performance Shows Remarkable Improvement in Gujarat

In a significant educational development, performance in Gujarati language exams at the Class 10 level has demonstrated a steady and impressive upward trend in recent years. According to data from the Gujarat State Education Board (GSEB), the 2025 results reveal a notable achievement: out of 6.26 lakh students who opted for Gujarati as their first language, a substantial 5.72 lakh successfully cleared the paper. This marks the second consecutive year that the subject has recorded a pass percentage exceeding 90%, highlighting a robust recovery and growth in language proficiency among students.

Sharp Rise from Previous Years

The current success stands in stark contrast to the situation in 2019, when the pass percentage for Gujarati was a mere 64.5%. At that time, approximately 2.5 lakh students failed the subject, indicating widespread difficulties. The dramatic improvement to over 90% in 2025 underscores the effectiveness of targeted educational interventions and increased focus on language skills within the state's curriculum.

Challenges and Expert Insights

As International Mother Language Day is celebrated annually on February 21, educators and experts have identified persistent areas of difficulty for students. Key challenges include grammar, writing methods, and comprehension skills. Many attribute these issues to a weaker foundational base and insufficient reading habits developed at a younger age.

Hemant Patel, a Gujarati teacher from Mansa in Gandhinagar, emphasizes that sentence formation, reading comprehension, and grammar remain problematic for numerous students. "Speaking the language and approaching it academically are fundamentally different. This distinction is particularly evident in how the language is written," he explains. "We consistently encourage students to practice more and grasp the basics thoroughly to bridge this gap."

Strategies for Improvement

To address these challenges, educators have implemented various strategies. Vinesh Valand, a language teacher from Dholera, notes that efforts often begin with reading exercises for students in Classes 6 to 9. "Students frequently break sentences into smaller parts to enhance understanding, which helps build their analytical skills," he says. "Additionally, the advent of technology has introduced several new words into the language, necessitating adaptations in teaching methods."

The primary academic focus remains on strengthening the foundational knowledge of Gujarati and assisting students in expressing their thoughts more effectively in the language. This involves a combination of traditional teaching techniques and modern approaches to cater to evolving linguistic needs.

Looking Ahead

The sustained high pass percentages in Gujarati exams reflect a positive shift in language education in Gujarat. Continued emphasis on foundational skills, coupled with innovative teaching practices, is expected to further enhance student performance and foster a deeper appreciation for the mother tongue among the younger generation.
