Heavy rains across several parts of India have forced authorities to declare a school holiday on July 9, 2026, in multiple states including Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Mumbai, and Kerala. The decision comes after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red and orange alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall in these regions.
Delhi-NCR Schools Closed
In Delhi, the government announced the closure of all schools for the day due to waterlogging and traffic disruptions caused by incessant rain. The Delhi Education Department issued an order stating that both government and private schools will remain shut. Similar measures were taken in Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, where district administrations declared a holiday for all educational institutions.
Mumbai and Maharashtra
Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra also witnessed heavy downpour, leading to school closures in several districts. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that all schools and colleges in the city will remain closed on July 9. The IMD warned of extremely heavy rainfall in the region, with isolated areas expected to receive over 200 mm of rain.
Kerala Braces for Floods
In Kerala, the state government declared a holiday for all schools in seven districts: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki. The decision was taken after the IMD issued a red alert for these districts, predicting very heavy rainfall and possible flooding. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority advised residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel.
Other Affected States
Apart from these regions, school holidays were also announced in parts of Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu due to heavy rains. In Gujarat, schools in Surat and Vadodara districts were closed. Karnataka's coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi also declared a holiday for all schools and colleges. Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts followed suit.
According to the IMD, the heavy rainfall is attributed to a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal and the active monsoon conditions. The weather office has predicted that the rainfall will continue for the next 24 to 48 hours in most affected areas.
Parents and students are advised to check official notifications from their respective state education departments and local administrations for updates. Authorities have also urged people to stay indoors and avoid waterlogged areas to ensure safety.
