This alarm follows a recent incident where a Class VII student from a private school in the Sidhgora area was apprehended while carrying a sharp-edged weapon to school.

Details of the Sidhgora Incident

On Tuesday, the minor was discovered in possession of a chapar, a traditional sharp weapon, after previous altercations with his classmates. Vijendra Kumar, the officer-in-charge at Sidhgora police station, confirmed that the boy had somehow obtained the weapon and brought it to the school premises. Fortunately, the school authorities detected it promptly, preventing any potential harm.

The parents of the 13-year-old student, along with his teachers, were summoned to the police station for a discussion. In a friendly environment, the minor was counselled about the severe consequences of carrying such prohibited items. Kumar emphasized that no formal complaint was lodged in this case. The student was subsequently handed over to his parents with a recommendation for professional counselling to address underlying issues.

A Pattern of Violence in Jamshedpur Schools

This incident has once again highlighted a disturbing series of violent episodes involving school students in Jamshedpur. Notably, on November 12, 2025, a 16-year-old student named Tausif Khan was stabbed by his schoolmates outside a private school under the Bistupur police station area. The attack followed an altercation during school hours, and the victim, who was bleeding profusely, was rushed to the hospital and narrowly survived. This event caused significant panic among students and parents alike.

Over the past six months, approximately half a dozen violent incidents involving school students have been reported from suburban areas of the city, indicating a troubling pattern that requires immediate attention.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, teachers and school administrators revealed that the school plans to arrange counselling sessions for the involved student. They stressed the urgent need for more active parental involvement in children's day-to-day upbringing and discipline at home.

Nakul Kamani, president of an association of private schools in Jamshedpur, identified lack of parental engagement as a primary factor behind such incidents. "Parents need to spend more quality time with their children, which many are failing to do. As a result, children often feel lonely and resort to attention-seeking behaviours, including acts of violence," he explained. Kamani added that most private schools have counsellors available and emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts between parents and schools to address these issues at an early stage.

Psychologist and counsellor Sunita Acharya pointed to excessive exposure to mobile phones and online content as another critical factor adversely affecting children. "From a very young age, children are increasingly glued to mobile phones, unknowingly consuming violent content that deeply impacts their developing minds. With parents spending less time with their children, mobile phones are effectively replacing parents and grandparents as companions," she noted.
