Meghalaya Government Allocates Rs 1,200 Crore Annually for Educational Support

In a significant announcement, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma of Meghalaya revealed on Friday that the state government invests nearly Rs 1,200 crore every year to bolster over 4,500 educational institutions through ad-hoc and deficit grants. Additionally, approximately Rs 120 crore is allocated annually for teachers' salaries under the deficit grant system, underscoring a robust financial commitment to the education sector.

CM Sangma Emphasizes Education as a Transformative Tool

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the diamond jubilee celebration of Synod College in Shillong, CM Sangma assured continued government support, highlighting Meghalaya's standout position among northeastern states for its sustained dedication to a large number of institutions. "The greatest investment we can make as a society and as a government is in human capital, and education remains the most powerful tool to transform our society and take our state forward," he stated, reinforcing the administration's focus on educational advancement.

Synod College's Legacy and Growth Praised

The event, themed 'Grace, Growth and Gratitude', was held at the Students' Field in Jaiaw, Shillong, where CM Sangma lauded Synod College's enduring legacy. He noted that from humble beginnings, the college has evolved significantly, touching thousands of lives and shaping generations of youth with strong Christian values. "These values have guided students to become responsible citizens, contributing meaningfully to society," he added, applauding the institution's role in community development.

Principal Highlights College's Expansion and Achievements

G Lyngdoh, the principal of Synod College, detailed the institution's journey since its establishment in 1965 with just 43 students offering pre-university arts education. She reported that the college has grown into a major educational hub with over 3,000 students across higher secondary, undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional programmes. Notably, it has successfully undergone four cycles of accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), securing an A+ grade in the most recent assessment, a testament to its academic excellence.

Future Plans for Skill-Based Training

Looking ahead, Principal Lyngdoh announced plans to establish an extended campus at Mawpdang in the New Shillong Township. This new facility will focus on skill-based and livelihood training programmes, aimed at benefiting youth from the area and neighbouring villages, thereby enhancing employability and local economic growth.

This comprehensive investment and strategic initiatives reflect Meghalaya's proactive approach to strengthening its educational framework, with CM Sangma's remarks underscoring a long-term vision for societal transformation through sustained educational support.
