Military Training and Self-Defence Program to Launch in Maharashtra Schools from February 1
In a significant move aimed at fostering discipline and patriotism among young students, the Maharashtra government has announced the introduction of military training and moral orientation in schools across the state, set to commence from February 1, 2026. The initiative, which includes self-defence training specifically for girls, was unveiled by School Education and Sports Minister Dada Bhuse during the diamond jubilee celebration of the state's textbook publishing house, Balbharti, held in Pune.
Comprehensive Training Framework Involving Multiple Stakeholders
Minister Bhuse elaborated on the program's structure, revealing that it will leverage existing resources and personnel to ensure effective implementation. Scout and Guides, National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets, and retired army personnel from nearby areas will be roped in to conduct the training sessions. This collaborative approach aims to provide students with practical skills and a strong ethical foundation from a young age.
The minister reiterated the government's commitment to this initiative, which was first announced in June last year. At that time, plans were disclosed to involve over 2.5 lakh ex-servicemen across Maharashtra, in addition to NCC cadets and Scouts and Guides. The Department of School Education will be collaborating closely with the Ministry of Ex-servicemen Welfare to facilitate these trainings, ensuring a structured and impactful rollout.
Addressing Societal Concerns Through Moral Education
Highlighting the urgency of such programs, Bhuse referenced a recent distressing incident in Badlapur, where a 37-year-old school van driver was arrested for allegedly molesting a four-year-old girl. He pointed out that a similar incident had occurred in Badlapur in 2024, and despite the accused being killed in an encounter, the recurrence underscores a persistent perverse mindset in society. "Therefore, it is important to impart moral knowledge at the school level itself," Bhuse emphasized, linking the training to broader societal safety and ethical development.
Focus on Self-Defence for Girls and Holistic Development
A key component of the program is the self-defence training for girls, designed to empower them with skills to protect themselves. This aspect addresses growing concerns about women's safety and aligns with efforts to build confidence and resilience among female students. The military training for all students is envisioned not just as physical exercise but as a means to instill values such as patriotism, discipline, and teamwork.
Bhuse also took the opportunity to praise Balbharti, noting its emotional connection with generations of students. "Even though generations and technology have changed, the poems and lessons in the textbooks are still remembered," he remarked. He highlighted that Balbharti continues to provide high-quality, unique textbooks in 10 languages at affordable prices, supporting the state's educational framework.
Implementation Timeline and Expected Impact
The program is scheduled to begin on February 1, 2026, with preparations underway to integrate it into the school curriculum. The involvement of retired army personnel and NCC cadets is expected to bring real-world experience and rigor to the training, making it both educational and engaging for students. This initiative reflects the government's proactive stance on enhancing student welfare and societal values through education.
As Maharashtra takes this step, it sets a precedent for other states to consider similar programs, potentially leading to a nationwide emphasis on military training and moral education in schools. The move is seen as a response to contemporary challenges, aiming to shape responsible and capable citizens for the future.
