In a significant boost to its educational and cultural landscape, Mohali is set to expand its public library network with the construction of four new state-of-the-art facilities. The project, with a total budget of Rs 1.40 crore, will see libraries built in Sectors 77, 78, 79, and 80.
Foundation Ceremony and Project Details
Local MLA Kulwant Singh is scheduled to lay the foundation stones for these new community assets on Friday, January 1, 2026. The initiative is fully funded by the Municipal Corporation Development Fund and will be executed by the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC). Each library, with an approximate area of 1,800 square feet, is estimated to cost around Rs 35 lakh.
Officials have designed these libraries with a strong emphasis on accessibility and modern amenities. Key features will include separate restrooms for women and dedicated pantry facilities, ensuring a comfortable and inclusive environment for all visitors.
Phased Construction and Strategic Vision
The project will be implemented in two clear phases. The first phase will focus on completing the construction of the library buildings. Once the structures are ready, the second phase will involve furnishing them with books, seating, furniture, and other essential equipment.
An MC official highlighted the project's core objective, stating it is aimed at "promoting a culture of education and self-learning", particularly benefiting students and youth who are preparing for various competitive examinations. The initiative is designed to enhance access to quality reading and learning spaces in the city's newly developed residential sectors.
Strengthening Mohali's Educational Ecosystem
This expansion is not an isolated effort but part of Mohali's ongoing commitment to building a robust public knowledge infrastructure. Previously, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) constructed libraries in several locations, including gardens and parks across various phases and in Sector 69 and Kargil Park, Sector 70. These facilities were later transferred to the Municipal Corporation for operation and maintenance.
The addition of four new libraries in the rapidly growing sectors 77 to 80 is expected to significantly strengthen the local educational ecosystem. "The new facilities will provide students, researchers, and general readers with a quiet, well-equipped environment close to their homes, reducing the need to travel to distant parts of the city," added an official.
With plans for adequate seating, a peaceful ambiance, and modern amenities, these libraries are poised to become vital knowledge hubs and community centers in Mohali's expanding neighborhoods, fostering a lifelong love for reading and learning.
