The Ministry of Education, Government of India, has opened online applications for the National Teachers’ Award 2026, a prestigious honor recognizing outstanding contributions by school teachers nationwide. The Punjab School Education Department (Secondary) has disseminated detailed guidelines to District Education Officers and school heads outlining the application process and selection timeline.

Eligibility and Application Process

Eligible candidates include regular teachers, headmasters, principals, and school in-charges working in government and recognized schools with at least 10 years of regular teaching service. Applications are submitted via self-nomination on the official Ministry of Education portal. The registration deadline is July 10, with final submission of applications due by July 13.

Ineligible individuals include contractual teachers, Shiksha Mitras, retired teachers, private tutors, educational administrators, education inspectors, and staff of teacher training institutions.

Selection Procedure at District and State Levels

The selection process begins at the district level. A district selection committee, chaired by the Deputy Commissioner, will verify applications and shortlist candidates. From July 14 to 21, each district may recommend a maximum of three candidates to the State Selection Committee. The state committee will review nominations between July 22 and 29, forwarding six shortlisted candidates to the national-level independent jury.

National Jury Presentation and Final Announcement

Shortlisted teachers must deliver a 10-minute presentation before the jury from August 3 to 7, showcasing their teaching practices, innovations, and achievements. The final list of awardees is expected to be announced between August 10 and 20. Selected teachers will be honored at the National Teachers’ Award ceremony on September 4 and 5, part of Teachers’ Day celebrations.

The National Teachers’ Award is one of India’s highest honors for school teachers, aimed at recognizing excellence in teaching, innovation, leadership, and commitment to improving education quality.
