Presidency College tops preference list among TN govt colleges

Chennai: Of the top five most preferred colleges in Tamil Nadu, four are located in Chennai. Presidency College emerged as the most sought-after among 181 government colleges, receiving the highest number of applications so far — 32,808 applications for 2,380 seats. The other four top colleges are Government Arts College in Coimbatore, Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College, and Queen Mary's College.

Most Preferred Courses

Among government colleges, BA Tamil is the most preferred course, offered in 154 colleges, with over two lakh students opting for it. The other popular courses are BSc Computer Science and BCom (General). BA English, BBA, BSc Chemistry, and BA Economics also received a high number of applications this year.

Why Presidency College Stands Out

R. Raman, principal of Presidency College, said, "Presidency College is still one of the best colleges for basic science programmes such as physics, chemistry, and botany, along with Loyola College. We have the best lab facilities since the British period. All faculty members hold PhDs." He added, "The college also provides hostel facilities for more than 2,000 students, which is another major attraction." The college also offers several co-curricular activities.

Government Arts College, Nandanam

Government Arts College in Nandanam has received over 25,000 applications so far this year for 1,430 seats. Principal D. Thangarajan noted, "After converting it into a co-education college two years ago, we are receiving more applications. Availability of more courses and the location are other attractions."

Admission Statistics

There are 1.25 lakh seats in 181 government arts and science colleges. Tamil Nadu Government Arts and Science Colleges Admissions has received 2,05,485 registrations, with 1,52,997 students having paid their fees. Among those who paid fees, 92,848 are girls and 60,086 are boys. Additionally, 63 transgender individuals have also applied. The last date to apply is May 29.

Admissions are likely to be conducted in the first week of June. Colleges will invite candidates based on the merit list and enrol them.
