UAE Ministry of Education Unveils Three-Year Academic Calendar for Enhanced Planning

In a significant move aimed at bringing greater stability to the education sector, the UAE Ministry of Education has officially approved a comprehensive academic calendar spanning the next three school years. This forward-looking initiative covers the periods from 2026–2027 through 2028–2029, establishing fixed start dates, term breaks, and final school days for both public and private institutions across the nation.

The decision provides much-needed clarity and advanced notice for parents, students, and school administrators, allowing families and educators to plan their schedules well in advance. According to the Ministry, this structured calendar is designed to support a sustainable educational framework that carefully balances instructional time with high-quality learning outcomes, while also taking into account important educational and social considerations.

Compliance Rules and Curriculum Exceptions

The Ministry has emphasized that all schools must strictly observe the designated mid-term break periods. However, a degree of flexibility has been introduced for certain institutions. Local education authorities may grant permission to private schools that do not follow the Ministry's official curriculum to divide the October mid-term break between October and February. This split arrangement must not exceed five school days and must align with operational requirements and educational needs.

It is important to note that this flexibility does not extend to private schools operating in Sharjah, which remain subject to the emirate's specific regulatory framework. Additionally, the approved calendar does not apply to private schools following the Indian, Bangladeshi, or Pakistani curricula, which may maintain their own academic schedules.

All schools are required to comply fully with the approved dates. To ensure consistent student attendance until the final day of each term, schools must conduct final assessments or complete curriculum requirements during the last week of the academic period. The only exception to this rule applies to year groups that are scheduled to sit for pre-arranged international examinations.

Long-Term Planning and Sector Stability

The Ministry has highlighted that establishing a three-year academic framework significantly strengthens readiness and preparedness across the entire education sector. This extended planning horizon supports more efficient resource allocation, enables earlier programme planning, and facilitates smoother operational management for educational institutions.

By publishing academic dates through to mid-2029, the Ministry aims to reinforce stability within the education system while positioning schools as central institutions in preparing future generations. This strategic approach reflects a commitment to creating a predictable and structured learning environment that benefits students, families, and educators alike.
