Vasai student dies after sit-up punishment by teacher

A tragic incident at a school in Vasai has resulted in the death of a Class 6 student, Anshika Gaud, following an alleged punishment that required her to perform 100 sit-ups. The young girl passed away on Friday night after undergoing medical treatment.

The Punishment and Its Aftermath

The incident occurred on Saturday, November 8, when Anshika and other students reportedly arrived late to school. According to statements from parents, teacher Mamta Yadav ordered the latecomers to perform 100 sit-ups as punishment. The students allegedly completed over 90 sit-ups before being allowed to return to their classroom.

Anshika, who was known to have a pre-existing medical condition, began feeling unwell after returning home. She fell asleep but her condition deteriorated later in the day when she experienced breathing difficulties. Her family immediately rushed her to a local hospital.

Medical Treatment and Tragic Outcome

When her condition failed to improve at the local medical facility, Anshika was transferred to Mumbai's prestigious JJ Hospital for advanced treatment. Despite the best medical efforts, the young student could not be saved and she passed away on Friday night, sending shockwaves through the community.

The Waliv police have registered an accidental death report while awaiting crucial evidence. We are awaiting the postmortem report and the school education department inquiry report based on which further course of action will be decided, stated a police officer involved in the case.

Official Response and Investigation

The school education department has initiated a formal inquiry into the incident through the local education officer. Vasai's education officer, Sonali Matekar, confirmed the gravity of the situation, calling the incident very tragic.

A committee is going to conduct a more detailed inquiry following which strict action will be taken, Matekar told media representatives. She emphasized that corporal punishment is prohibited under law and schools along with teachers have been made aware of it time and again.

The incident has sparked outrage among parents and local political groups. Parents, accompanied by functionaries of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), visited the school on Saturday to demand strict action against the teacher involved.
