KGMU to Award 2,441 Degrees at 21st Convocation

Lucknow's prestigious King George's Medical University (KGMU) is set to hold a grand academic celebration this weekend. The institution will confer a total of 2,441 degrees across various programmes during its 21st convocation ceremony, scheduled for Saturday.

Dignitaries and Distinguished Guests to Grace the Occasion

The convocation event will witness the presence of high-profile dignitaries. Governor Anandiben Patel will preside over the ceremony. The chief guest for the event is Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, JP Nadda. Adding to the significance of the day, UP BJP chief Pankaj Chaudhary will attend as the special guest.

Speaking at a pre-convocation press conference on Friday, Vice-Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand emphasized the deeper meaning of the event. She stated that the convocation is far more than a ceremonial formality. It serves as a powerful reminder that the university's graduates are entrusted with upholding the core values of ethical medical practice, scientific temper, and compassion as they embark on their professional journeys.

A Detailed Breakdown of Degrees and Awards

The university will award a vast array of qualifications, reflecting the diverse medical and paramedical streams it offers. The major degree distributions are as follows:

  • 1,180 MBBS degrees
  • 562 MD/MS degrees
  • 50 DM/MCh super-specialty degrees
  • 393 BSc Nursing degrees
  • 87 MDS degrees
  • 57 BDS degrees

Additionally, degrees will be conferred in programmes including BSc Optometry, BSc Radiotherapy, MSc Nursing, Master in Hospital Administration, MPhil in Clinical Psychology, and various PhD tracks.

A notable highlight of this year's convocation is the achievement of near-perfect gender parity. Of the 2,441 graduates, 1,224 are male and 1,217 are female, showcasing a balanced representation across academic disciplines.

Academic excellence will be specially recognized with 81 students receiving medals and prizes for their outstanding performance. Among these high achievers, 48 are women and 33 are men.

Honorary Doctorate and Ceremonial Preparations

In a special honour, the Doctorate Honoris Causa will be conferred upon Dr. Ajay Kumar Sood, the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. This award is in recognition of his exceptional and influential contributions to the fields of science, research, and national policy-making.

The university administration has left no stone unturned in preparing for the smooth execution of the event. Dr. KK Singh, the in-charge of the KGMU media cell, confirmed that extensive arrangements have been made to ensure the convocation proceeds flawlessly, marking a memorable day for the graduating class of one of India's premier medical institutions.
