In a significant announcement, the Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University (RPCAU) has declared that its network of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) is making substantial contributions to agricultural extension education while providing comprehensive support to farmers across the region.
KVKs Poised for National Recognition
Vice-chancellor P S Pandey confirmed on Friday that all 16 existing KVKs under the university's umbrella will soon feature among the top 20 agricultural science centers in the country. This ambitious goal underscores the institution's commitment to excellence in agricultural research and farmer education.
The announcement came during the inauguration of the 9th meeting of the Extension Education Council of RPCAU at Pusa in Samastipur. Pandey emphasized the critical need for developing extension models that scientists could implement nationwide to enhance agricultural productivity and maximize benefits for farmers.
Addressing Contemporary Agricultural Challenges
Pandey highlighted that numerous challenges have emerged during recent nationwide agricultural campaigns, stressing that all these issues must be addressed promptly and effectively. The university is taking proactive measures to ensure that farmers receive timely solutions to their most pressing problems.
Adding expert perspective to the discussion, P Das, former deputy director general of Extension Education, observed that traditional extension models require immediate replacement with innovative approaches. He advocated for a multi-disciplinary approach to agricultural extension education to meet the demands of modern farming practices.
Embracing Sustainable Farming Practices
Das particularly emphasized the importance of creating awareness among farmers about adopting latest technologies for carbon-free farming with minimal water usage. This focus on sustainable agriculture aligns with global environmental concerns while addressing local resource constraints.
The event also featured Padma Shri Raj Kumari Devi, popularly known as Kisan Chachi, who expressed her deep connection with the university's scientists. "I treat all the scientists of the university as my teachers," she stated, acknowledging that she learned the fundamentals of agricultural activities from them.
Progressive farmers Yogendra Kumar Pathak and Raghav Sharan Singh shared their field experiences and challenges during the meeting, providing valuable ground-level insights that will help shape future extension education programs.
