The close-knit community of Nathowal village in Ludhiana district recently came together in a heartwarming ceremony to celebrate two of its own. Gurdeep Singh Buttar and his wife Navdeep Kaur Buttar were publicly honoured by fellow villagers, local leaders, and elders for bringing immense pride to their homeland through exceptional accomplishments in the world of sports.
A Hockey Prodigy's Journey from Nathowal to National Arenas
Gurdeep Singh Buttar's tryst with hockey began at the tender age of 7 or 8, under the watchful eye of his father, Balwant Singh, who himself was a coach for Hockey Indian services teams across the Army, Navy, and Air Force. This early foundation set the stage for a remarkable sporting career. Gurdeep pursued his graduation and post-graduation from Patiala, balancing academics with athletics.
His dedication saw him participate six times each in the senior national games and university games, showcasing his consistent performance at the highest domestic levels. Professionally, he serves as the Principal Accountant General in Kolkata. However, his passion for hockey remains undimmed. In a recent stellar achievement, Gurdeep represented India in the 40-plus category at the World Masters Game and Asian Championship in Hong Kong from November 26 to 30, where his skill and perseverance paid off as he clinched the gold medal for the country.
Navdeep Kaur: An Educator and Netball Star
Standing proudly beside him is his wife, Navdeep Kaur Buttar, who is a force to reckon with in her own right. She currently works in the education department of Haryana as a Physical Assistant Teacher. Navdeep has been a prominent figure in netball, having participated in numerous national-level competitions. She has represented Haryana in inter-university contests and played at the All-India Inter Zonal level.
Her prowess took her to international platforms, including the South Asian Championship and the prestigious Asian Netball Championship. Reflecting on a recent high point, Navdeep shared, "In 2024, I participated in the Asian Netball Championship and represented the Indian team as vice-captain." The honour bestowed in her native village made the achievement even more special for her.
A Proud Moment for Family and Village
The felicitation ceremony was a touching tribute organised by the villagers. The couple was honoured at their residence by MLA Hakam Singh and block president Mansa Khan, alongside the village elders. Speaking about the emotional event, Gurdeep told TOI, "My wife and I were honoured at our residence... It was a proud moment for our family to get honoured by the village elders."
Navdeep echoed this sentiment, calling it a "pleasure moment to be honoured in my own village." The event underscores the community's deep respect for sporting excellence and its role in fostering local pride. The story of the Buttars is not just one of individual success but a testament to family legacy, unwavering dedication, and the profound support of one's roots.
