Cannes Winner Cristian Mungiu's English Debut 'Fjord' Aims for 2026 Festival
Mungiu's 'Fjord' with Sebastian Stan targets Cannes 2026

Cristian Mungiu Sets Sights on Cannes 2026 with 'Fjord'

Acclaimed Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, a celebrated name at the Cannes Film Festival, is planning a grand return in 2026. His weapon of choice will be his debut English-language feature film, titled 'Fjord'. The project was officially confirmed by the director himself at the Marrakech Film Festival, as reported by Deadline.

Star-Studded Cast and Compelling Plot

The film will feature a powerful lead pair in Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. They will portray a mixed Romanian-Norwegian couple who decide to start a new life. The story follows them as they move with their children to the wife's native fjord village in Norway. However, their idyllic plans are thrown into disarray when they encounter another couple with a radically different philosophy on life, leading to unforeseen conflict and drama.

Mungiu, who is currently in the post-production phase, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. "I'm in post-production now. We shot this year in April and May in Norway, mostly," he told Deadline. He also shared his delight in working with the cast, adding, "We are very happy that we happen to have a couple of actors in the film that have had a lovely year, Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. I couldn't have met them in a better circumstance for their careers, and I liked working with them."

A Significant Project for Both Director and Star

'Fjord' marks Mungiu's first directorial venture in three years, following his 2022 drama 'R.M.N'. The director has a formidable history at Cannes, having competed four times. His accolades include the prestigious Palme d'Or for '4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days' in 2007, Best Screenplay for 'Beyond The Hills' in 2012, and Best Director for 'Graduation' in 2016.

For Sebastian Stan, this film is a homecoming of sorts. The actor was born in Romania and lived there until he was eight years old before moving to the United States. Mungiu revealed an interesting detail about their collaboration, stating, "I started talking to Sebastian some eight years ago about doing a project together, and it's very funny that this project that we've done now, it's his first in Romanian, but my first in English."

He further elaborated on the film's linguistic landscape, calling it a "mixture of English and Norwegian with a little spice of Romanian every now and then." This unique blend promises to add an authentic layer to the intimate story of a couple navigating cultural and personal challenges. The director is currently attending the Marrakech Film Festival, where he shared these exciting updates about his upcoming work.
