Eminent Punjabi writer, translator, and former Finance and Accounts Officer of Punjabi University, Patiala, Dalip Singh Uppal, passed away at his residence in Urban Estate, Patiala, at 5 am on Saturday, June 27, 2026. He was 88 years old.
Contributions to Literature and Administration
Uppal served for many years as an administrative officer at Punjabi University. He was widely recognized as a serious reader, an insightful writer, and a distinguished connoisseur of Hindustani classical music. He had a strong command over Punjabi, English, and Hindi languages and literature.
Noted children’s writer Darshan Singh, president of the Punjabi Sahit Sabha, Patiala, confirmed the news of Uppal’s demise. Reflecting on their association, Darshan recalled how Uppal had presented him with copies of his autobiography, Himmat De Hasil (Achievements of Courage).

Expressing grief over Uppal’s death, Gurbhajan Singh Gill, Chairman of the Punjabi Lok Virasat Academy, Ludhiana, conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. The family includes his wife Dr Kamlesh Uppal, son Dr Alankar Singh, daughter Dr Nivedita Singh, and son-in-law Dr Bhim Inder Singh.
