Mumbai police have registered an FIR after a make-up artist, who is part of Bollywood producer Rhea Kapoor's team, reported that rented gold jewellery worth Rs 1.3 crore was stolen while she was carrying it from India to the United States for Kapoor to wear at the Met Gala.
Details of the theft
The complainant told police that she and the rest of the team were accompanying Kapoor for the Met Gala, scheduled for April 29. Two pairs of gold earrings were rented from jewellers in India for Kapoor. One pair, set with emeralds and diamonds, was valued at Rs 66 lakh. The other pair, featuring Zambian emeralds, was worth Rs 69 lakh.
The team landed in New York City on April 28 and checked into a hotel. The complainant then carried the jewellery box to hand it over to a team member. However, upon opening the box, she discovered that both pairs of earrings were missing.
