Health Struggles with Myositis

Amid her successful career, Samantha has been battling an autoimmune disease called myositis. She has been open about her health challenges and how they affected her life. In a recent interview with Gallata Plus, she said, “Now, I’m in a good place where I can eat comfortably. Not excessively, but eat. I am always asked, why did you lose so much weight? People never really know what's going on with someone. It’s not like I don't want to eat, I can't eat.”

Samantha reflected on how the condition transformed her food choices. “Those two years that I was on a break, food was a trigger. If I eat anything that upsets my gut, I would trigger the autoimmune condition. And so, my food became extremely restricted and extremely bland. I would eat the same food for breakfast, lunch and dinner for two years,” she shared.

Comeback and Personal Growth

To make a stronger comeback, Samantha took a break to fight her autoimmune condition and change old habits. She told Glutes (as reported by Hindustan Times): “It was shocking to me that a girl from nowhere, like from a small town, experienced stardom and people loved me. They were loving me on the big screen. They are looking forward to watching my films. They are screaming my name. With this surprise, I worked in films. I was addicted to the game of stardom… In a year, I remember that I made five movies back to back, and all of them were hits, so people thought I had a golden leg, and I believed that I should live up to the expectations.”

She added, “When I had to take that break recently, I was hustling the most. I wanted to do many films and keep doing it. I never thought there would be retirement. You become so egoistic as an actor that you see no end, you refuse to see there is an end. After this recent break, I could envision that end for me, and that really changed me in many ways. I made certain decisions during the break, like if I come back to this profession after the break, I will have to change a lot of things, a lot of old patterns.”

What is Myositis?

According to Harvard Health, myositis is the medical term for muscle inflammation. In myositis, inflammation damages the fibers of a muscle, causing weakness by interfering with the ability of the muscles to contract. Although myositis can cause muscle aches and tenderness, weakness is usually the dominant symptom. In some cases, myositis is a short-term problem that resolves after a few days or weeks; in others, it is part of a chronic condition that can lead to muscle atrophy and severe disability. Symptoms include muscle weakness, pain, and tenderness, with other symptoms varying by cause.
