Cheteshwar Pujara, who retired from international cricket in August last year, says yoga played a significant role throughout his career, especially during his time with the Indian team. On International Day of Yoga, the former batting star shared how the practice helped him physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Yoga Brought a Sense of Calm
Pujara was first introduced to yoga as a youngster at a zonal cricket academy, where it was part of the training programme to improve flexibility. However, he was not regular with his practice until later. “Once I started playing for India, the pressure increased significantly. There are phases when you don’t perform well, and dealing with the expectations and scrutiny can be challenging,” he said. Determined to succeed, he tried yoga seriously after someone suggested it would help him stay healthy, improve his cricket, and relax his mind. “The results were remarkable. Yoga helped me physically, mentally, and emotionally. It improved my flexibility, aided recovery, and brought a sense of calm that was invaluable during high-pressure situations,” Pujara noted. He emphasised that yoga requires consistent practice to experience its benefits.
Consistent Practice During Playing Days
Pujara rarely missed a yoga session during his playing days, unless travelling or attending important family commitments. “Yoga helped me stay mentally balanced, keep my thoughts under control, and maintain a positive outlook. Every session left me feeling calm, focused, and energised,” he said. Despite injuries and minor health issues, yoga and breathing exercises kept him fit and aided recovery. He typically spent 20 to 30 minutes daily on yoga. Since retiring, he has not been as regular but looks forward to making it a consistent habit again.
Deeper Connection with Inner Self
For decades, yoga and meditation have been anchors for Pujara, guiding him on and off the field. “Yoga is much more than a form of physical exercise; it is a journey of self-discovery, awareness, and mindfulness. It has always helped me stay positive, control my thoughts, and maintain emotional balance,” he said. The practice improved his endurance, enhanced focus, and enabled calmness under pressure. “Regular practice gives you the ability to stay true to yourself even in the most challenging situations, without getting carried away by emotions or external distractions. When your mind is centred, no outside noise can shake your confidence,” Pujara added. He believes yoga helps build a deeper connection with one's inner self, and for him, a combination of yoga, breathing exercises, and prayer has always worked wonders, keeping him grounded and bringing peace and clarity.
