Padma Vibhushan awardee and legendary Pandavani folk singer Teejan Bai passed away at the age of 70, marking the end of an era for Chhattisgarh's traditional oral storytelling art. She died on July 5, 2026, after a prolonged illness at a hospital in Raipur. Her death was confirmed by family sources and local officials.
Who was Teejan Bai?
Teejan Bai was born on August 24, 1956, in the village of Ganiyari in Chhattisgarh's Durg district. She belonged to a poor tribal family and began performing Pandavani at a young age, despite facing opposition from her community and family. Pandavani is a traditional folk performance style that narrates stories from the Mahabharata, involving singing, dramatic gestures, and musical accompaniment.
She was credited with popularising Pandavani beyond Chhattisgarh, bringing it to national and international stages. Her powerful voice and energetic performances captivated audiences for over five decades. She received the Padma Shri in 2003, the Padma Bhushan in 2016, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2020, making her one of the highest decorated folk artists in India.
Recognition and awards
In addition to the Padma awards, Teejan Bai was honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987 and the FICCI Award for Best Folk Artist. She was also awarded an honorary doctorate degree from the Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya in Khairagarh. In 2019, she was appointed as the ambassador for the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign in Chhattisgarh.
According to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, "Teejan Bai was a cultural icon who put Chhattisgarh on the global map. Her demise is an irreparable loss to the world of folk art." The state government announced a three-day mourning period and a state funeral with full honours.
Impact on Pandavani and folk art
Teejan Bai performed in over 10,000 shows across India and abroad, including countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan. She was known for her unique style that blended traditional Pandavani with modern theatrical elements, making it accessible to younger audiences. She also trained over 200 students, ensuring the continuation of the art form.
Her performances often lasted for hours, with her energetic movements and emotional delivery. She was particularly famous for her rendition of the episode of Draupadi's disrobing and the character of Duryodhana. Many contemporary folk singers credit her as their inspiration.
Legacy and tributes
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, saying, "Teejan Bai's passing is a great loss for Indian culture. Her art transcended boundaries and inspired generations. She will continue to live through her music." The Ministry of Culture announced that a museum dedicated to her life and work will be established in Raipur.
She is survived by her two sons and a daughter. Her funeral was held on July 6, 2026, in her ancestral village Ganiyari, attended by thousands of mourners, including artists, politicians, and fans from across the country.
