Heavy Rains Lash Malnad and Coastal Karnataka
Relentless downpour over the past 48 hours has battered the Malnad and coastal districts of Karnataka, with the Tunga reservoir at Gajanur reaching its full capacity on Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days.
Tunga Reservoir at Full Capacity
The water level in the Tunga reservoir touched the maximum mark of 585.75 meters, prompting authorities to open all 12 crest gates to release excess water. According to a senior official from the Water Resources Department, "The inflow has been massive due to continuous rain in the catchment areas. We are releasing 45,000 cusecs of water downstream." This has led to a rise in water levels in the Tunga River, affecting low-lying areas in Shivamogga district.
Flood-Like Situation in Coastal Areas
In the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada, heavy rains have caused flooding in several villages. The district administrations have opened relief camps and evacuated residents from vulnerable areas. A total of 12 villages in Kundapur taluk have been submerged, with over 300 people moved to safer locations. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in the worst-hit regions.
Landslides and Road Closures
Multiple landslides have been reported in the hilly terrain of the Malnad region, disrupting road connectivity. The Shivamogga-Thirthahalli road and the Kollur-Agumbe ghat section have been closed for traffic. According to a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) official, "Several bus services have been cancelled or diverted due to the landslides. We advise passengers to check for updates before traveling."
Agricultural Damage
The incessant rains have also caused extensive damage to crops in the region. Paddy fields in the command areas of the Tunga reservoir have been inundated, with farmers reporting losses. A farmer from Shivamogga taluk stated, "The water entered our fields suddenly, and we could not save the harvest. This is a major setback for us." The state government has announced a compensation package for affected farmers.
Weather Forecast and Precautions
The IMD has forecast more heavy rainfall in the Malnad and coastal districts over the next 48 hours. The department has advised people in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of local authorities. The Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has set up control rooms in all affected districts and is monitoring the situation round the clock.
