Prosenjit Chatterjee Honoured with Padma Shri 2026

Veteran Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee was honoured with the Padma Shri at the Padma Awards 2026 ceremony held in New Delhi on May 25, 2026. The actor received one of India's highest civilian honours from President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Dressed in traditional Bengali attire comprising a kurta and dhoti, Prosenjit's appearance at the prestigious ceremony drew admiration from fans and the film fraternity alike. The actor appeared emotional while accepting the award, marking another milestone in his illustrious career spanning more than four decades.

Reacting to the Honour

Earlier, when the Padma Shri announcement was made, Prosenjit Chatterjee had shared with Hindustan Times that he received the news while interacting with audiences at a single-screen theatre during celebrations for his recently released Bengali film. Expressing his happiness, the actor shared, "I am in Delhi and glad as my son, actor-maker Trishanjit Chatterjee, has come along to see me receive one of the biggest civilian honours of the country. I am very emotional and elated at the same time."

The actor added that appreciation from audiences has always been the biggest reward for him. "When your work is liked and praised, it means the world to an artist, and awards just add that perfect plus to all the emotions and appreciation," he said.

Why He Chose Bengali Cinema over Bollywood

Prosenjit, often referred to as "Mr Industry" in Bengali cinema, also reflected on his early career choices and why he consciously decided to work in Bengali films despite opportunities elsewhere. "As we all know that my father, Biswajit Chatterjee, was a very big star from the 60s, and I could have easily made it via Bollywood or any other industry that was thriving, but I wanted to give my best to my craft and joined the Bengali film industry," he shared.

The actor recalled how Bengali cinema was going through a difficult phase when he began his journey, but eventually witnessed a remarkable revival over the years. "I remember this industry back then had seen a very low and bad time, especially when we started our career. But the tide just turned, and here we are; today, generations and generations have stood by me and the industry," he added.

A Heartfelt Tribute to His Mother

One of the most emotional moments from Prosenjit's statement came when he dedicated the Padma Shri to his late mother, acknowledging her sacrifices and support throughout his career. "I want to dedicate this honour bestowed by the Indian Government to my mother, whose sacrifices and guidance shaped my life and career over the last four decades," he said.

The actor became emotional while remembering her absence during this milestone moment. "I wish my mother was with me today so that I could share my joy with her. Receiving this prestigious award from the President will be a great moment — wish my mother could see that," he added.

Prosenjit also expressed pride in bringing national recognition to the Bengali film industry, which he has represented for decades. "That I could bring this honour to my Bengali film industry is something I will cherish forever," he said. Ending his statement on a warm note, the actor added with a smile, "I have always been Bumba or Bumbada for my people in the industry, and now even Bumba kaka or Bumba mama. That is how I wish to remain. Working for the growth and betterment of the Bengali film industry has always been and will continue to be my mantra."
