The Telangana State Women's Commission intervened decisively on Saturday, summoning and cautioning actor Sivaji after his controversial comments at a recent film function sparked widespread outrage. The commission took strong exception to remarks perceived as denigrating women.
Unconditional Apology and Withdrawal of Remarks
Appearing before the commission, actor Sivaji admitted his mistake and issued an unconditional apology. He stated he was withdrawing his remarks in their entirety and assured the panel that he would henceforth speak and conduct himself with dignity and respect towards women. Furthermore, Sivaji committed to working towards implementing changes in films he is associated with, aligning with suggestions made by the commission.
Commission Chairperson's Stern Rebuke
Commission chairperson Nerella Sharada strongly objected to the actor's observations, particularly the implied suggestion that women's dress sense is responsible for the harassment they face. She pointed out that harassment is pervasive and cuts across age and attire, affecting children and elderly women alike. Sharada highlighted the continued harassment faced by women artistes even when they appear in traditional clothing, underscoring that clothing has no link to a person's dignity or safety.
The commission categorised such comments as a form of 'moral policing' that erodes women's dignity. It emphasised the significant responsibility carried by filmmakers, actors, and event organisers to ensure that women artistes are treated with respect and provided with a safe and dignified working environment.
Controversy and Backlash
The controversy erupted after a video of Sivaji's speech at the film event went viral on social media platforms. The clip drew widespread criticism for reinforcing harmful stereotypes that blame women for harassment. Various women's organisations accused the remarks of legitimising misogyny and shifting accountability away from the actual perpetrators.
