Prosit Roy's 'Band Baaja Bitiya' Ad Film Ignites Conversation on Domestic Abuse
Director Prosit Roy has described his new ad film "Band Baaja Bitiya" as a silent protest against the societal evil of domestic abuse, a topic often brushed under the carpet. Released on February 25, the three-and-a-half-minute film stars acclaimed actor Gajraj Rao and has resonated deeply across India, with many viewers sharing their emotional responses on social media platforms.
A Father's Silent Defiance
Roy, known for his work on the film "Pari" and the series "Paatal Lok" season one, explained that the story prompted him to reflect on how his own father might react in a similar situation. "I felt he would've reacted in a similar way... People in the ad film are very real, middle-class individuals. Men from that generation often protest silently, they don't create dramatic confrontations, they quietly take action. This is the best way they can protest." He emphasized the importance of telling such stories to protect daughters, stating, "The silence is precisely why stories like this need to be told. Whatever happens, we have to protect our daughters."
Plot and Social Commentary
The film opens with the father, portrayed by Rao, receiving a distressing phone call from his daughter Surabhi. His pained expression reveals the gravity of the abuse she is enduring. When he seeks advice from family and friends, their responses reflect a common social mindset—urging her to "adjust", dismissing the abuse as minor, and suggesting that things might improve if she has a child. In a powerful act of defiance, the father spots a wedding band outside a shop and decides to take it along as he goes to bring his daughter back home, transforming celebratory wedding music into a symbol of resistance against the abuse.
Impact and Reception
Roy stated that the intention behind the film was to show reality, remind people of archaic values, and inspire change. "If even a few families feel encouraged to stand up for their daughters after watching this film, then we've achieved what we set out to do." The ad has garnered praise from notable figures such as veteran filmmaker Govind Nihalani, actor-former Union minister Smriti Irani, and actor Rajkummar Rao. Released digitally last month, it has gained significant viral traction, drawing millions of views and flooding Roy's inbox with messages, particularly from women who have faced similar situations.
Inspiration and Production
Inspired by true events, the basic storyline was developed by OR Radhakrishnan and Sneh Nihalani, with backing from Sandeep Goel, Director at Goel TMT, who aimed to create an ad that touches everyone. Roy expressed surprise at the film's massive impact, noting they were confident it was "good" but did not anticipate such deep connection. "A lot of women wrote to me saying they had faced similar situations for years. They said the ad film made them feel seen for the first time. That was extremely heartwarming."
Casting and Emotional Filming
When casting the father's role, Roy instinctively thought of Gajraj Rao, known for films like "Badhaai Ho", "Lootcase", and "Maidaan". "I could only see Gajraj Rao, his face immediately came to my mind. He's such a stalwart that I hardly had to say anything. Once we understood the character's background, he brought everything to life." Filming took place in Lucknow over two days, with emotional moments such as the mirror scene and the climactic hug between father and daughter leaving a profound impact on the crew.
Celebrity Endorsements and Legacy
Roy highlighted that appreciation from Govind Nihalani was particularly meaningful, as he has learned filmmaking from Nihalani's works like "Drohkaal" and "Ardh Satya". The film's success underscores its role in challenging societal norms and sparking necessary conversations about domestic abuse in India.
