Anupam Kher: Embracing Baldness as a Signature Strength in a Storied Career

Anupam Kher, whose remarkable acting journey began in 1981 and now encompasses more than 550 films, has carved a unique path in Indian cinema. Rather than viewing his bald appearance as a potential weakness, Kher has consistently transformed it into his most recognizable and powerful asset. Today, he stands as one of the most revered figures in the industry, celebrated with two National Awards and a significant international presence that few actors can match.

Resisting Stereotypes and Age-Based Labels

In a recent candid conversation with Pinkvilla, Kher opened up about his ongoing resistance to stereotypes, extending even into his daily interactions. He expressed a preference for younger individuals to address him as "AK" or "Anupam ji" rather than using traditional honorifics like "sir" or "uncle." This choice reflects his deliberate effort to avoid being confined by age-based categorizations that he finds limiting and outdated.

The veteran actor also highlighted his genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for engaging with younger generations. He actively seeks conversations on contemporary topics such as artificial intelligence, health advancements, and scientific discoveries, demonstrating a mindset that remains open and inquisitive despite his decades in the spotlight.

Turning Down Lucrative Hair Transplant Offers

One of the most striking revelations from the interview concerns Kher's steadfast refusal of numerous hair transplant proposals. He disclosed that hair-weaving companies and doctors have frequently approached him with attractive financial deals, hoping he would undergo the procedure. Kher, however, has consistently declined all such offers, maintaining his distinctive look.

"Main har hair weaving company ya doctor ka sapna hoon. Aur bahut saare log paise dene ko teyaar hain ki ek baar aap baal lagwalo humse. Maine yeh mauka unko nahi diya," Kher stated, translating to, "I am every hair-weaving company’s or doctor’s dream. And many people are ready to pay me to get a hair transplant done just once with them. But I never gave them that opportunity."

He further elaborated on his principled stance, emphasizing that financial need would never sway his decision. "Kitne bhi paison ki zarurat mujhe padh jaaye, main paise nahi lunga kyunki mujhe lagta hai main voh rahunga hi nahi," he explained, meaning, "No matter how much money I might need, I won’t take it because I feel I wouldn’t remain the same person."

Family Support and Humorous Anecdotes

Kher shared a heartwarming family story that underscores his commitment to his natural appearance. He recalled an incident when his son, Sikandar, was very young. Kher was reading a newspaper that contained a hair oil advertisement, and Sikandar, noticing it, immediately quipped, "Dad, don’t even think about it." This moment highlighted the supportive and humorous environment within his family, which Kher described as a true blessing that helps him stay grounded and true to himself.

Upcoming Professional Endeavors
