Babul Supriyo Explores AI's Dual Role in Modern Music Evolution

Singer, actor, and politician Babul Supriyo has provided insightful commentary on the real state of singing in the age of artificial intelligence during an exclusive conversation with IANS. He delved into the creation of his latest track 'Intaha Ho Gai Intezar Ki', a remix, revealing that it stemmed from discussions with Vikram Mehra, the Managing Director of a prominent media distribution company.

AI's Transformative Impact on Music Production

Supriyo shared that their conversation centered on how the music scene is undergoing a massive transformation, with AI driving numerous positive developments alongside some negative consequences. He emphasized that this technological shift is reshaping the industry in profound ways, affecting everything from composition to vocal performances.

To illustrate his point, Supriyo cited the recent blockbuster 'Dhurandhar', noting how AI has been used to manipulate the voices of original singers within the franchise. He explained that this approach represents a new frontier in music production, where technology enables creative reinterpretations of existing works.

Remixes as Musical Tributes to Original Compositions

The artist articulated a compelling perspective on remakes and remixes, stating, "I think that when you use AI in music or remake or remix a song, in a way you are giving respect to the old song and honoring it. It's a tribute to that particular song." He elaborated that among millions of songs, only select tracks receive remakes because they possess exceptional qualities that make them stand out as special compositions worthy of reinterpretation.

Supriyo's comments highlight how AI-assisted remixes can serve as contemporary homages to classic works, preserving their legacy while introducing them to new audiences through modern production techniques.

Changing Dynamics in Playback Singing and Vocal Ranges

Previously, Babul Supriyo has also addressed the evolving role of female singers in the music industry. He pointed out a significant trend where male singers are increasingly performing in higher octaves, which consequently forces female singers to lower their vocal ranges.

He explained, "The male singers are singing in such a high octave that sometimes the female singers, who are extremely talented, are left with no choice but to sing in a low octave. In this, sometimes the actual voice quality ends up suffering." This shift has led to noticeable changes in playback singing, with many contemporary songs featuring background vocals rather than traditional lip-syncing performances.

Supriyo's observations underscore how industry practices are adapting to new musical styles and technological capabilities, creating both opportunities and challenges for vocalists across genders.
