West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari convened a meeting with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators who have backgrounds in acting, to address concerns regarding the state's film industry. The chief minister's directive comes amid longstanding allegations of entrenched control by a handful of individuals, who are believed to be close to the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) regime in Tollywood.
Meeting Aims to Restore Confidence
The meeting, held at the state secretariat, focused on creating a 'fear-free' environment for filmmakers, producers, and artists. Adhikari emphasized the need to break the monopoly of certain groups that have allegedly stifled creativity and intimidated independent voices in the industry. The CM assured the actor-MLAs of his government's full support in implementing reforms to ensure transparency and safety.
Allegations of Mafia-Like Control
For years, Tollywood has faced accusations of being dominated by a nexus of producers, distributors, and political figures. Many artists have spoken out about coercion, forced casting, and financial exploitation. The previous TMC administration was often criticized for turning a blind eye to these issues. With the BJP now in power, the new government aims to dismantle these networks and restore the industry's credibility.
The actor-MLAs, including several popular faces from Bengali cinema, expressed optimism after the meeting. They highlighted the importance of a level playing field and promised to work closely with the government to draft a new policy for the film sector.

Adhikari outlined a multi-pronged strategy to tackle the problem.
