Biju Menon Ordered to Pay Rs 15 Lakh Over Film Promotion Absence

Producers' Association Demands Compensation from Actor Biju Menon

The Kerala Film Producers' Association has formally intervened in a financial dispute involving acclaimed Malayalam actor Biju Menon. The association has issued a directive, instructing the actor to pay a compensation amount of Rs 15 lakh to the production team behind his 2024 film 'Nadanna Sambhavam'. This decision follows a formal complaint lodged by the film's producer, Anoop Kannan, who alleges substantial financial losses directly attributable to the actor's non-participation in scheduled promotional activities.

Allegations of Contractual Breach and Financial Loss

Producer Anoop Kannan has publicly stated that he suffered a significant financial setback of Rs 25 lakh due to Biju Menon's absence from promotional events for the film. According to Kannan, the actor's contractual obligations, as outlined in a standard agreement drafted by the Kerala Film Producers' Association, clearly mandated lead actors to participate in promotional activities for a period of up to 10 days. Kannan emphasized that while the industry understands scheduling conflicts, a basic commitment of two to three days is considered reasonable and essential.

"Despite a clear contract and multiple requests, Biju Menon only cooperated for two and a half hours for promotional activities," Kannan alleged in a statement to Manorama Online. "He had initially expressed willingness, but when the time came, he ignored my requests. I was forced to repeatedly reach out. In the end, he participated for just two-and-a-half hours on one day—arriving at 11.30 am and leaving by 2 pm, citing various reasons."

Escalation of the Controversy and Industry Backing

The controversy first gained public attention on Monday, February 9, during a press conference addressed by FEFKA (Film Employees Federation of Kerala) General Secretary and filmmaker B Unnikrishnan. Unnikrishnan did not mince words, directly criticizing Biju Menon for his alleged failure to honor promotional commitments, which he stated is a standard part of film contracts.

"A leading actor in Malayalam cinema did not attend promotions, because of which a producer, who is also a director and a member of our organisation, lost Rs 25 lakh from what he was supposed to receive from a television channel. Is that a small amount? The same actor has not gone for the promotions of a film directed by Jeethu Joseph as well. I am talking about Biju Menon. I have no fear in naming him," Unnikrishnan declared, as reported by Asianet News.

Following this public accusation, producer Anoop Kannan came forward to confirm that he was the affected producer and detailed the extent of the alleged losses.

Formal Directive and Potential Consequences

In a decisive move, the Producers' Association has not only demanded the Rs 15 lakh compensation but has also suggested a practical method for settlement. The association has proposed that the amount could be deducted from the remuneration Biju Menon is due to receive for his ongoing project with prominent producer Listin Stephen. This indicates a serious attempt to enforce accountability within the industry's financial ecosystem.

Furthermore, the association's letter to the actor carries a stern warning. It explicitly states that the organisation will not cooperate with Biju Menon on any future projects if he fails to compensate Anoop Kannan for the alleged losses incurred during the 'Nadanna Sambhavam' promotions. This potential blacklisting represents a significant professional risk for the actor.

Awaiting a Response and Industry Implications

As of now, actor Biju Menon has not issued any public statement or response to the allegations made by the producer, the FEFKA General Secretary, or the directive from the Producers' Association. The silence from the actor's camp has only intensified scrutiny around the case.

This incident highlights critical issues regarding contractual adherence, professional ethics, and financial accountability within the Malayalam film industry. It underscores the economic importance of film promotions, where actor participation can directly influence box office returns and television rights deals. The Producers' Association's firm stance sets a notable precedent for handling similar disputes in the future, emphasizing that contractual obligations, especially concerning promotional duties, are binding and carry tangible financial consequences.

The outcome of this dispute is being closely watched, as it may influence standard operating procedures and contract enforcement mechanisms for film productions across Kerala and potentially other regional film industries in India.
