Cynthia Erivo Shares Co-Star Support Amidst Intense Performance Schedule
Acclaimed Hollywood actress and singer Cynthia Erivo has opened up about the overwhelming support she is receiving from her Wicked co-stars, particularly Ariana Grande, who has expressed deep concern for her well-being. Erivo is currently starring in a demanding one-woman production of Dracula in London's West End while simultaneously training for the London Marathon.
Ariana Grande's "Very Worried" Messages
During a recent appearance on the popular morning show This Morning with hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary, Erivo revealed the heartfelt messages she has been receiving. "Ari is very, very worried that I'm not resting enough, so she's consistently texting," Erivo shared, highlighting Grande's persistent check-ins. The actress described a supportive network that feels like family, with co-stars Jonathan Bailey and Jeff Goldblum also offering encouragement.
Erivo elaborated on the gestures from her colleagues, stating, "Jeff came, Jonathan came. I think everyone's sort of like trickling in. I got some really beautiful messages, and Jonathan is constantly texting to make sure I'm okay." She expressed particular affection for Goldblum, noting, "Jeff sent the most beautiful love letter, and he does. I love Jeff very, very much, and Jonathan, that everyone's so lovely, it feels like we have a little bit of a family."
Memorizing 28 Characters and 20,000 Words
The West End production is an immense undertaking, with Erivo performing approximately 28 different characters across a script spanning around 20,000 words. She detailed her unique approach to memorization, explaining, "I learn it in chunks. What you have to do is learn it with a reason. So I have to know where the characters are and what they're doing and why they're saying things, and that's the only way I can commit it to memory. You learn it almost like a dancer."
This method allows her to navigate the complex material while maintaining the emotional and physical intensity required for each performance.
Balancing Marathon Training with Rehearsals
In addition to her theatrical commitments, Erivo is rigorously training for the London Marathon, aiming to complete it in under three hours and thirty minutes. She has ingeniously integrated her rehearsal process into her training routine. "Whilst I'm running, I run the run lines in my head. I'm trying to make good use of every moment," she said, demonstrating her dedication to maximizing efficiency.
The Emotional and Physical Toll of Performance
Erivo candidly discussed the exhaustive aftermath of each show, where she pours everything into her performance. "There's so much poured into it, emotionally, physically, mentally, everything is switched on. I don't switch off at all," she confessed. The intensity leaves her in a state of disorientation post-show, as she described, "Everything is on and everything is firing all the time so that when you come off, you go, 'Where am I? Yeah, am I again?' And so it takes a second to just put everything back together."
This heightened state significantly impacts her sleep, with Erivo noting, "Yeah, it takes me a while to get to sleep. I don't get sleep until like, 1am in the morning." Her revelations underscore the immense personal sacrifice and discipline involved in her current professional endeavors.
The support from her Wicked co-stars, including Ariana Grande's concerned messages, provides a crucial emotional anchor as Erivo navigates this challenging period, blending artistic excellence with athletic ambition.
