Dan Levy Closes Door on 'Schitt's Creek' Revival Following Catherine O'Hara's Passing
In an emotional revelation, Dan Levy has definitively stated that he has no interest in reviving the beloved sitcom 'Schitt's Creek' without the late Catherine O'Hara. The actress, who played the iconic Moira Rose, passed away in January at age 71 following a brief illness, leaving a void that Levy says makes continuing the show impossible.
Creative Plans Halted by Loss
During a recent interview on CBS News Sunday Morning, Levy opened up about his creative journey and the profound impact of O'Hara's absence. He admitted that before her passing, he had been actively "thinking about" developing a sequel to the award-winning comedy series that captured hearts worldwide.
"No," Levy said simply when asked if he could envision a future for the Rose family. "Not now. You can't." His voice broke as he explained the emotional difficulty of even visiting Ontario, Canada, where the show was filmed, stating, "It's tough, it's tough being back. I didn't think that I'd have quite an emotional reaction."
Irreplaceable Magic and Lasting Memories
For years, Catherine O'Hara served as the heart and soul of 'Schitt's Creek', bringing what Levy described as "irreplaceable magic" to every scene. Her performance not only defined the series but helped shape its enduring cultural legacy.
During the interview, Levy became visibly emotional when discussing his time working with O'Hara. "Just a lot of memories. Memories with Catherine," he shared. "It's what you have to hold onto is the memories of it all."
A Heartfelt Tribute and Family Connection
Following O'Hara's passing from a pulmonary embolism with rectal cancer as the underlying cause, Levy paid tribute to his co-star on Instagram on January 30th. "What a gift to have gotten to dance in the warm glow of Catherine O'Hara's brilliance for all those years," he wrote. "I will cherish every funny memory I was fortunate enough to make with her."
Levy, who co-created 'Schitt's Creek' with his father Eugene Levy, also reflected on O'Hara's deep connection to their family. "Having spent over fifty years collaborating with my Dad, Catherine was extended family before she ever played my family," he said in his tribute post. "It's hard to imagine a world without her in it."
The Final Chapter for the Rose Family
With Catherine O'Hara no longer with them, the possibility of continuing the Rose family's story has been permanently put to rest. Levy's clear stance underscores how integral O'Hara was to the show's identity and success.
The actress's passing has created what Levy describes as an "abundantly clear" reality: 'Schitt's Creek' cannot exist without Catherine O'Hara's unique talent and presence. Her legacy remains intact through the six seasons of the celebrated series and the cherished memories of those who worked alongside her.
