Enforcement Directorate Summons Actor Jayaram in Sabarimala Gold Theft Investigation
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has officially summoned prominent actor Jayaram to appear for questioning next Tuesday, February 17, as part of its ongoing investigation into the high-profile Sabarimala gold theft case. This development marks a significant escalation in the probe, with federal financial crime investigators seeking to clarify specific aspects of the actor's involvement and statements.
Focus on Relationship with Unnikrishnan Potti
According to investigative reports from Mathrubhumi, the ED's questioning will particularly focus on Jayaram's personal friendship and financial transactions with Unnikrishnan Potti, a key figure in the Sabarimala temple administration. The agency is reportedly preparing to summon Potti for interrogation in the near future as well, indicating a coordinated investigative approach.
Jayaram has previously acknowledged his close association with Potti during media interactions, stating, "I had a close acquaintance with Unnikrishnan Potti. I knew him as an important person in Sabarimala." The actor revealed that their initial meeting occurred during the Makaravilakku season, after which Potti made multiple visits to Jayaram's residence in Chennai.
Discrepancies in Pooja Accounts Under Scrutiny
Investigators are examining apparent inconsistencies in Jayaram's statements regarding two separate poojas that utilized golden temple artifacts. During earlier questioning by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), Jayaram reportedly claimed both ceremonies occurred on the same day. However, subsequent evidence revealed a significant timeline discrepancy.
- The pooja at Smart Creations, which involved golden "kattilla" plates, took place in June 2019.
- The ceremony at Jayaram's residence, featuring dwarapalaka plates, occurred in September 2019.
This two-month gap between events has raised serious questions about the actor's initial testimony. The SIT meticulously examined these chronological inconsistencies while recording his official statement, and now the ED seeks to revisit these points during their interrogation.
Jayaram's Denial of Smart Creations Connection
During police questioning, Jayaram emphatically denied any association with Smart Creations, the venue for the June 2019 ceremony. The actor stated he had no knowledge of the organization's sponsors or owners and attended the event solely because Potti extended the invitation.
Regarding the September pooja at his home, Jayaram maintained that the ceremony was conducted exclusively because the dwarapalaka plates were brought to his residence, presenting this as the singular reason for hosting the religious function.
Professional Commitments Continue Amid Investigation
Despite the ongoing legal scrutiny, Jayaram continues his professional engagements. His latest film "Aashakal Aayiram", featuring his son Kalidas Jayaram, recently premiered and has demonstrated steady box office performance.
According to data from the Sacnilk website, the film has achieved a worldwide collection exceeding Rs 2.66 crore within its first five days, with Indian net earnings reaching Rs 2.39 crore. The daily collections show consistent audience interest:
- Day 1: Rs 46 lakh
- Day 2: Rs 62 lakh
- Day 3: Rs 72 lakh
- Day 4: Rs 29 lakh
- Day 5: Rs 30 lakh
This summons represents the second official investigative call for Jayaram, following his earlier appearance as a witness before the SIT. The ED's involvement suggests authorities are examining potential financial dimensions of the temple gold theft, which has captivated national attention since its discovery.
