FEFKA Launches Scathing Attack on Biju Menon Over Alleged Promotion No-Shows

The Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) has launched a strong public criticism against veteran Malayalam actor Biju Menon, accusing him of skipping mandatory movie promotions and causing significant financial losses for producers. The controversy emerged during a media briefing on Monday, February 9, where FEFKA leadership detailed specific instances of alleged contractual breaches.

Specific Allegations of Financial Damage

FEFKA General Secretary B Unnikrishnan revealed concrete examples during the press conference. "A producer, who is also a director, lost Rs 25 lakh from the amount due to him from a television channel because a prominent actor in Malayalam cinema failed to attend promotions," Unnikrishnan stated explicitly. "That same actor also skipped the promotions for the recent movie 'Valathu Vashathe Kallan' directed by Jeethu Joseph. I am talking about Biju Menon; I have no hesitation in naming him."

The federation emphasized that attending promotional activities represents a contractual obligation under agreements with the producers' association. Unnikrishnan questioned the disparity in commitment levels, noting, "When that is not honoured... you should show at least 10 per cent of the strictness towards that commitment that you show during salary negotiations."

Broader Industry Implications and Proposed Solutions

Beyond the specific allegations against Menon, FEFKA addressed systemic issues within the Malayalam film industry. The federation proposed drafting new agreements that would include:

  • Actors charging Rs 1 lakh or more per project
  • Producers and production controllers
  • Film directors

These stakeholders would collectively monitor expenditure and shooting schedules, making everyone responsible for ensuring projects progress according to pre-agreed terms. Unnikrishnan suggested that resolving such issues could lead to more favorable remuneration discussions, stating, "If such issues are resolved, then during next year's discussions, producers will willingly offer a 50 per cent hike in remuneration."

Historic Agreement on Working Hours

In a significant parallel development, FEFKA announced it has finalized a fresh agreement with the Kerala Film Producers' Association (KFPA) that fundamentally changes working conditions on film sets. The key provision reduces maximum working hours from 16 to 12 hours per day.

This landmark decision follows extensive observation of how extended working hours negatively impact the physical and mental health of film set employees. The agreement represents a major step toward improving working conditions in the industry and addressing long-standing concerns about crew welfare.

Industry Response and Outstanding Questions

As of the latest reports, Biju Menon has not publicly responded to FEFKA's allegations. The veteran actor, known for his extensive career in Malayalam cinema, now faces serious questions about his professional commitments and contractual obligations.

The controversy highlights broader tensions within the film industry regarding:

  1. Contractual compliance among high-profile actors
  2. Financial accountability in film production
  3. The balance between artistic commitments and promotional responsibilities
  4. Systemic reforms needed in industry working conditions

These developments come at a time when the Malayalam film industry is experiencing both creative renaissance and increasing scrutiny of its working practices. The dual announcements from FEFKA—addressing both individual accountability and collective working conditions—signal a potential turning point in how the industry manages its professional relationships and labor standards.
