Producer's Financial Crisis After Horror Film 'Sumathi Valavu' Sparks Industry Debate
Murali Kunnumpurath, who first gained public attention when his life story inspired the acclaimed film 'Vellam' starring Jayasurya, is now facing severe financial distress. The producer recently shared an emotional video detailing his current monetary struggles, which he attributes primarily to bankrolling the recently released horror film 'Sumathi Valavu'.
Venu Kunnappilly's Candid Revelation About Film's Financial Troubles
Reacting to Murali's public appeal, veteran producer Venu Kunnappilly spoke openly about the financial troubles surrounding 'Sumathi Valavu'. He revealed that the project ultimately cost nearly Rs 20 crore in total, a staggering amount that far exceeded initial projections.
Venu Kunnappilly recalled advising Murali years ago against proceeding with the film, warning him about fundamental weaknesses in the story that he felt made it more suitable for television than cinema. Despite these warnings, Murali proceeded with the project under external influence.
The Escalating Budget and Production Challenges
The film was initially planned with a modest budget of Rs 5–6 crore, but production costs later ballooned to nearly Rs 15 crore. Venu watched the completed film before its theatrical release and was stunned by the final outcome, estimating that combined production and release expenses reached approximately Rs 20 crore.
In a detailed social media post, the 'Mamangam' producer wrote: "Pitfalls in cinema. A video of the producer of the film Sumathi Valavu that is circulating on social media prompted me to write this note. I had heard the story of this film a few years ago. Before the shoot began, I met its producer Murali in Dubai and spoke to him about the weaknesses of the story, which felt like something suited for a serial."
Venu continued: "I even advised him, as much as possible, not to go ahead with the project. But influenced by those around him, he moved forward. A story that was worth about Rs 5–6 crore ended up costing him nearly Rs 15 crore when made into a film."
Broader Industry Concerns and Systemic Issues
Venu Kunnappilly emphasized that this situation reflects broader problems within the film industry. He noted that despite no pre-business arrangements being made, Gokulam Movies eventually stepped in to ensure the film's release.
The producer expressed grave concerns about industry practices: "This is not an isolated case. The harsh truth is that hundreds of producers are collapsing financially and walking on the brink of suicide. Many don't speak out due to fear of losing their reputation."
He highlighted specific problematic behaviors:
- Some industry professionals lack basic sincerity and enjoy arrogance using others' money
- Certain individuals don't care if budgets double or exceed initial plans
- Some keep bringing in new producers as budgets rise uncontrollably
- There are people unfit not just to direct, but not even capable of holding basic responsibilities
Venu concluded with a pointed question: "Unless such people are permanently kept out of the industry, disasters like this will continue. When will the leaders of film associations finally wake up?"
Murali Kunnumpurath's Emotional Appeal and Accusations
In his video shared on the last day, 'Sumathi Valavu' producer Murali Kunnumpurath made a heartbreaking confession: "I believed it ('Sumathi Valavu') would be a big success. But now my life has completely slipped away. I feel like I have no option other than to die. I haven't lived enough, I haven't fulfilled my desires."
He revealed the devastating financial impact: "Because of this film, I lost around Rs 7 crore." The producer further accused director Vishnu Sasi Shankar and writer Abhilash Pillai, holding them directly responsible for the film's catastrophic failure.
Critical Questions for the Film Industry
This incident raises serious questions about financial responsibility and oversight in film production:
- How can producers better assess project viability before committing substantial resources?
- What mechanisms should exist to prevent budget escalation beyond reasonable limits?
- How can the industry protect vulnerable investors from irresponsible practices?
- What role should film associations play in maintaining ethical standards?
The case of 'Sumathi Valavu' serves as a cautionary tale about the risks inherent in film production, particularly when proper financial safeguards and creative assessments are overlooked. It highlights the need for greater transparency, better mentorship for new producers, and stronger industry regulations to prevent similar financial disasters in the future.
