Isabella Wei Auditioned for Sophie Before Bridgerton's Posy

Bridgerton Star Isabella Wei's Audition Journey: From Sophie to Posy

In a revealing interview, Hong Kong actor Isabella Wei, who portrays the charming Posy Li in the hit Netflix series Bridgerton, has shared that her path to the role began with an audition for a different character altogether. Wei initially tried out for the lead role of Sophie Baek, which was ultimately awarded to Australian actress Yerin Ha.

The Widespread Audition for Sophie

Speaking with Mumbai Mirror, Wei explained the casting process, noting that many actors started with the Sophie role. "We all auditioned for Sophie. I think everyone auditioned for Sophie first, and then they found the other characters from there," she said. This insight highlights the competitive nature of landing a part in the high-profile period drama, which has captivated audiences worldwide with its romantic narratives and lavish production.

Falling in Love with Posy Li

Despite the initial focus on Sophie, Wei quickly developed a deep affection for Posy after receiving the character briefing. "When I first got the briefing for Posy, I think she was described as very plain and kind, or maybe simple. And when I read the script, I found her very funny, sweet and whimsical," she recounted. This connection fueled her desire to play Posy, leading to a successful audition that she now cherishes. "So, after auditioning for Posy, I really wanted to play her. And I’m so grateful I got a chance. She’s one of my favourite characters that I have ever played," Wei added, emphasizing her gratitude for the opportunity.

Navigating Expectations and Nerves

Wei, also known for her role in The Black Dove, admitted to entering the Bridgerton project with little anticipation of its scale. "When I first booked Bridgerton, I had no idea what to expect," she confessed. However, the filming process helped alleviate her anxieties. "I think as we started filming, all of the nerves and all of the anticipation kind of went away because then we were in it and we met everyone and became friends. It became more about life and working together instead of the fact that Bridgerton was this amazing, incredible, high-profile show," she elaborated, highlighting the collaborative and supportive environment on set.

Pre-Release Jitters and Post-Release Relief

The period leading up to the show's release was marked by significant nervousness for Wei, who pondered the potential public reception. "Definitely right before the release, I was feeling quite nervous in the sense that I didn’t know what was going to happen. Yes, it gets a lot of social attention, but there’s also the consideration that it doesn’t—people might not like the season or your character. There’s a lot of thought behind it," she stated. Fortunately, the positive reactions have brought her immense satisfaction. "But seeing the reactions now, I’ve been really happy with everything and it’s one of my favourite seasons. So the day it was released, a lot of my anticipation went away because I was like, well, there’s no more wondering. We just have to watch and see what will happen," Wei concluded, expressing relief and joy at the audience's response.

This candid revelation from Isabella Wei offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the casting dynamics of Bridgerton, showcasing how actors often navigate multiple roles before finding their perfect fit in a globally celebrated series.
