Vijay's Jana Nayagan Faces Censor Board Hurdles, February 20 Release Rumored

The much-anticipated Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan continues to be embroiled in certification delays with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), leading to widespread speculation about a potential release on February 20. This development comes as the film's producers have not approached the courts following recent judicial directions, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the project.

Legal Standstill and Release Speculation

Reports indicate that the makers of actor Vijay's swansong, Jana Nayagan, have neither approached the single judge of the Madras High Court nor the Supreme Court, even a week after the Chief Justice's bench directed the petitioner to return to the single judge. This legal inaction has fueled rumors that the film might finally hit theaters on February 20, marking a significant shift from its original scheduled release date of January 9.

The film was first submitted to the censor board for certification on December 18. Following standard procedure, a five-person examining committee viewed the film and recommended granting a U/A certificate, contingent upon a few edits. The producers submitted an edited version on December 24. However, in early January, they were informed that the film was being forwarded to a revising committee after a committee member raised objections about certain content, claiming their opinions were not adequately considered.

Judicial Interventions and Delays

With the release just four days away, the producers moved to the Madras High Court, subsequently announcing a postponement from the January 9 date. On January 9, Justice PT Asha of the Madras High Court directed the CBFC to grant the film a U/A certificate. However, Additional Solicitor General ARL Sundaresan, representing the certification board, approached the division bench and secured a stay on the release.

The producers then appealed to the Supreme Court against the division bench's order, but the SC refused to entertain the plea and redirected them back to the Madras High Court. After hearing the matter, the division bench sent it for fresh consideration, further complicating the timeline.

Confidentiality and Industry Reactions

Amidst these developments, there were earlier rumors that KVN Productions had agreed to refer the film to a review committee. When contacted by The Hindu, CBFC Chennai Regional Officer D Balamurali stated that he was not legally permitted to disclose any information regarding the matter. He emphasized, "I don't have any information. Even if I do have, I cannot reveal it at this stage. All our examination process is confidential. We cannot reveal anything until a certificate is issued. The law prohibits sharing of any such information. Public will get to know only when the film is certified. At that time, we will communicate through our portal."

This stance highlights the opaque nature of the certification process, leaving fans and industry observers in suspense. The film's journey has been marked by:

  • Initial submission for certification in December
  • Recommendation for U/A certificate with edits
  • Submission of edited version and subsequent revision committee referral
  • Multiple court interventions and stays
  • Current speculation about a February 20 release

As the situation unfolds, the entertainment industry and Vijay's extensive fan base await official confirmation regarding the release date, hoping for a resolution to the protracted censor row that has delayed this highly anticipated cinematic offering.
