Iconic 'Khichdi' Role Brought Laughter But School Struggles for Actor's Daughter
Veteran actor Supriya Pathak's portrayal of the endearingly clueless Hansa in the cult classic sitcom 'Khichdi' stands as one of Indian television's most memorable comic performances. While the character generated widespread popularity and endless laughter among audiences, her daughter Sanah Kapur has recently disclosed that the show's immense fame created unexpected challenges during her childhood years.
Why Supriya Pathak Initially Stepped Away From Acting
During a candid conversation with Bollywood Bubble, the mother-daughter duo reflected on the 'Khichdi' journey, revealing intimate details about Supriya's career decisions and Sanah's school experiences. Supriya Pathak explained that she deliberately took time off from acting when Sanah was about to be born.
"Actually, something unusual happened in my career," Supriya shared. "I had been working extensively, but when Sanah was approaching, I felt I wanted to take a proper break. So I consciously decided not to accept acting projects for some time."
The conversation turned lighthearted when Sanah jokingly interjected, "It's my fault," prompting Supriya to immediately respond, "No, no, it's not." Sanah quipped back, "As always, mothers blame daughters for everything," to which Supriya clarified she wasn't assigning blame but celebrating her daughter's arrival.
"You did the right thing. You came into my life, which is a wonderful, positive development," the veteran actor affirmed. She emphasized that although she paused mainstream acting, she remained creatively engaged during that period through other ventures.
"Basically, I took a deliberate break from acting. During that interval, we initiated 'Mohandas B.A. LLB' and established our own production company. Later, we produced a show called 'Drishtant.' So we continued working creatively, but within our own production house framework," Supriya elaborated.
How 'Khichdi' Became Her Comeback Project
Supriya Pathak revealed that once she felt prepared to resume external work, the 'Khichdi' offer materialized. "That's precisely when I received the 'Khichdi' offer. Since I was returning to external projects after a considerable hiatus, I genuinely wanted to deliver something exceptional," she explained.
She noted her longstanding relationship with creators JD Majethia and Aatish Kapadia facilitated her comfort in accepting the role. "I had known JD and Atish for many years prior... so when they extended the offer, I readily agreed," Supriya stated.
Discussing Hansa's character, Supriya highlighted the role's simplicity and distinctive nature. "It's essentially about a woman who accomplishes practically nothing, yet everyone adores her, myself included," she described. She added that the character subtly challenged conventional expectations placed on women.
"A woman can simply declare she doesn't want to handle everything and merely desires to prepare herself and enjoy life. That permission should be granted to women too," Supriya emphasized about Hansa's underlying message.
Sanah Kapur Says 'Khichdi' 'Tortured' Her During Childhood
While the sitcom achieved tremendous popularity, Sanah Kapur confessed its fame complicated her school experiences. She recalled, "'Khichdi' actually tortured me significantly, honestly. The show's dialogues genuinely troubled me during my childhood."
Sanah explained that classmates frequently teased her because they associated her mother with Hansa's eccentric personality traits.
"Because children in school can be quite peculiar... some friends would express sympathy, saying 'Your mom is Hansa, she doesn't cook or accomplish anything.' This frequently frustrated me because my actual mother represents the complete opposite of that character," Sanah revealed.
She described Supriya Pathak as an exceptionally dedicated parent despite her demanding acting schedule. "She has managed everything. Every morning she would rise early and personally prepare my lunchbox. She would cook breakfast, attend shooting sessions, return to collect me from school, and assist with homework," Sanah detailed with admiration.
Sanah also humorously recalled how famous 'Khichdi' dialogues pursued her constantly. "For instance, the line 'Loha kha ke jaana'... numerous people repeatedly recited that dialogue to my mother," she laughed.
Supriya Pathak's Favorite Hansa Dialogue
Even years after the show's initial broadcast, Supriya Pathak retains affectionate memories of Hansa's iconic lines. When questioned about her preferred dialogue, she shared one that fans instantly recognize.
"And now I can only declare, 'I'm exhausted, brother... I'm genuinely exhausted.'" Over the years, 'Khichdi' has maintained its cult following, with Hansa remaining among Indian television's most cherished comic characters. For Sanah Kapur, however, the show will forever be connected to both amusing and slightly awkward childhood recollections.
The enduring legacy of 'Khichdi' continues to influence Indian pop culture, while this mother-daughter revelation provides fresh perspective on how television fame impacts family dynamics behind the scenes.
