Kusha Kapila Opens Up About Her Acting Journey and Industry Realities
When Kusha Kapila was approached for the second season of the popular series 'Maamla Legal Hai', she felt a surge of genuine excitement. However, this opportunity was accompanied by a profound sense of preparedness, shaped significantly by her past experiences in the entertainment industry.
The Reality Check: From Content Creator to Aspiring Actor
Kapila candidly admitted that while her journey as a content creator flourished smoothly, her foray into acting did not unfold with the same ease. Reflecting on that initial phase, she remarked, "Everything had worked out beautifully for me as a creator. I assumed acting would follow suit naturally, but a reality check can be truly grounding."
After making her acting debut with 'Ghost Stories' in 2020, Kusha Kapila quickly realized that success in digital content creation did not automatically translate into acting credibility or acceptance. This realization prompted a conscious decision to pause her acting pursuits and focus intensely on learning the craft.
Strategic Pause and Dedicated Learning
Moving to Mumbai, Kapila dedicated nearly two years to understanding the nuances of acting. "I told myself this isn't working. I need to step back and learn properly," she shared in an interview with Mid-day. During this period, she even turned down several acting offers to avoid what she described as "half-baked work," demonstrating her commitment to quality over quick opportunities.
Kapila emphasized that relying solely on popularity or social media reach can be limiting for long-term success in acting. She acknowledged that early in her career, she might have been considered for roles primarily because of her influencer status, but she stressed that sustained work requires genuine talent and skill development.
"If you don't want to be reduced to just a marketing hire, you need to figure things out before others do," she explained, highlighting the critical importance of self-awareness, preparation, and continuous learning in building a lasting acting career.
Addressing the Influencer vs. Actor Debate
Kusha Kapila also addressed the ongoing industry debate about influencers being cast over trained actors, acknowledging that the concern raised by formally trained performers is valid. She expressed solidarity with actors who have dedicated years to studying the craft through formal education and training.
"They are right to question it," she stated, while also noting that the entertainment industry is gradually shifting away from such practices. According to Kapila, merit ultimately becomes the deciding factor in casting decisions, and only those who invest time and effort in learning their craft manage to sustain themselves in the competitive industry.
Successful Transitions and Industry Evolution
Kapila pointed to several content creators who have successfully transitioned into acting by putting in substantial effort and dedication. She mentioned names like Prajakta Koli, known for her role in 'Mismatched', and Dolly Singh, who appeared in 'Thank You For Coming', as examples of this positive shift within the industry.
She stressed that those who continue to find consistent work in acting have consciously worked on developing their skills, proving that growth and successful transition are possible with proper dedication, persistence, and a willingness to learn. This evolution reflects a maturing industry that increasingly values talent and preparation alongside popularity and reach.
