Lalit Modi Alleges Political Interference in IPL Kochi Franchise Entry
The founder and first chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Lalit Modi, has made startling revelations regarding the controversial entry of the Kochi franchise into the league. In a series of statements, Modi claimed that political pressure, particularly from Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, played a pivotal role in allowing Kochi to bid despite the city lacking a stadium.
Modi questioned, "Nobody has asked this question. How did I allow Kochi to bid in the system?... Kochi didn't even have a stadium. So why did I allow Kochi to come into the system?... Why did I open it for him (Shashi Tharoor)? Because he…" The remarks came during an interview where he detailed the events surrounding the 2010 IPL Kochi scandal.
According to Modi, "Sonia Gandhi was backing Shashi Tharoor. I got calls from Ahmed Patel and Pranab Mukherjee in those days. You had that p@** Rajeev Shukla coming up to me and say 'Chalo Ahmed Patel aa raha…'" These statements highlight the alleged high-level political interference that enabled the Kochi franchise to participate in the IPL auction.
The Kochi franchise, later known as Kochi Tuskers Kerala, was a short-lived team that played only in the 2011 IPL season before being terminated due to ownership disputes and financial irregularities. Modi's latest comments shed new light on the behind-the-scenes maneuvering that allowed the team's entry, despite apparent lack of infrastructure and due process.
Modi, who was the IPL chairman from 2008 to 2010, has been a controversial figure in Indian cricket. He was banned for life by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2013 on charges of misconduct and financial irregularities. His recent statements are likely to reignite debates about the nexus between politics and cricket in India.
The revelations have drawn sharp reactions from political circles, with critics demanding a thorough investigation into the claims. Meanwhile, supporters of Tharoor and the Congress party have dismissed Modi's allegations as baseless and motivated.
