Veteran Filmmaker M. M. Baig Found Dead at Mumbai Residence
Veteran filmmaker M. M. Baig, renowned for his contributions to Hindi cinema and as the father of former child actor Baby Guddu, was discovered deceased at his residence earlier this week. He was in his 70s, and the news was officially confirmed by his publicist, Hanif Zaveri.
Circumstances of the Tragic Discovery
According to Zaveri, Baig had been unwell for an extended period and was living alone. Neighbors alerted the police after noticing a foul odor emanating from his house, as he had not been seen for four to five days. In a statement to PTI, Zaveri elaborated, "He was unwell for quite some time. Since he hadn't come out of the house for four to five days, the neighbors complained to the cops about a foul smell coming from his house. The police opened the door and found Baig sahab's dead body and informed his daughter about it. They later took his body to Cooper Hospital for a post-mortem at around 1:30–2:00 am. He was a loving man. I pray for his departed soul."
A Storied Career in Mainstream Hindi Cinema
Baig's career in the film industry was deeply rooted in mainstream Hindi cinema. He began as an assistant director, collaborating with prominent filmmakers such as J. Om Prakash, Vimal Kumar, and Rakesh Roshan. Over the years, he was associated with several notable films, including:
- Aadmi Khilona Hai
- Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharnii
- Karz Chukana Hai
- Kala Bazaar
- Kishen Kanhaiya
He later directed Massom Gawah starring Naseeruddin Shah, though the film did not see a release, and Chhoti Bahu featuring Shilpa Shirodkar.
Mentoring Hrithik Roshan Before His Debut
Zaveri also highlighted Baig's close professional association with Rakesh Roshan, revealing that Baig played a key role in mentoring Hrithik Roshan before his debut. "Baig sahab shared a warm equation with Rakesh Roshan sahab. He helped Hrithik Roshan with diction, voice modulation, and dialogues. This was much before his debut film happened," Zaveri said, referring to Hrithik's first film, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai.
Remembered as Father of 1980s Child Star Baby Guddu
Baig is also fondly remembered as the father of Baby Guddu, born Shahinda Baig, who was one of the most recognizable child actors of the 1980s. She appeared in popular films such as:
- Aakhir Kyon?
- Nagina
- Pyar Kiya Hai Pyar Karenge
- Aulad
Baby Guddu has since transitioned to a career with an international airline, marking a shift from her early fame in Bollywood.
The film industry mourns the loss of M. M. Baig, a dedicated professional whose legacy spans decades of cinematic work and mentorship, leaving an indelible mark on Hindi cinema.
