Madhavan: White Women Now Flock to Indian Men, Seeing Them as Entrepreneurs
Madhavan on Changing Global Perception of Indian Men

Veteran actor R Madhavan, a prominent figure in Indian cinema since the 1990s, has highlighted a significant and positive shift in the global perception of Indian men. In a recent interview, he contrasted past experiences of wariness from white women abroad with the current scenario where they are actively drawn to Indian men, viewing them as successful entrepreneurs.

From Wariness to Welcome: A Shift in Perception

Madhavan shared a revealing anecdote about the change in attitudes. He recalled that until a few years ago, when Indian men visited international bars, white women would often be wary, assuming they were there solely to hit on them. This long-standing stereotype created an invisible barrier. However, Madhavan insists this dynamic has undergone a dramatic transformation.

"Now, it is such that when an Indian enters a space, four white women walk towards us thinking we are some entrepreneur and they want to say hello," Madhavan stated during a chat on BookMyShow's YouTube channel. He emphasized that this new reality, where Indian men are seen as high-profile and successful, is a refreshing change that he is yet to see accurately portrayed in Indian cinema.

A New Cinematic Vision Beyond 'Filmy' Tropes

Beyond discussing societal changes, Madhavan opened up about his professional aspirations. With a career spanning over three decades, the actor is actively seeking collaborations with newer directors who are not confined by traditional Bollywood tropes. He expressed a desire to be part of projects that reflect India's contemporary growth story.

"The thing that is getting in my way right now is the filmyness of the industry in terms of the way they think," Madhavan explained. He pointed out that many filmmakers are creating stories to please their mentors rather than pursuing original, ground-breaking narratives. Madhavan aims to combine his years of experience with a director's refined and modern approach to storytelling.

This reflection comes at a time when some of his own popular past films, like Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, are being re-evaluated by newer audiences for normalizing problematic behaviors such as stalking.

What's Next for the Versatile Actor?

On the work front, R Madhavan remains a busy and sought-after actor. His upcoming projects include the comedy De De Pyaar De 2 and the Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar. This year, audiences have already seen him in a variety of roles in films such as Kesari Chapter 2, Aap Jaisa Koi, Hisaab Barabar, and Test, showcasing his continued versatility and dedication to his craft.
