Malavika Mohanan's Mumbai Home: A Kerala-Inspired Sanctuary of Art and Heritage

In an interview with Architectural Digest, Malavika, known for her role in 'The Raja Saab,' emphasized the family's deliberate approach to design. "We were very particular that we didn't want the space to look like a cookie-cutter home," she stated. "We wanted it to reflect where we are from, our love for the arts, and our love for heritage." Instead of opting for standard decor store purchases, the family curated items that narrate stories of travel and tradition, resulting in a warm and lived-in atmosphere.
Striking Red Floor and Art Pieces
The entrance features a striking red floor designed to emulate Athangudi tiles, a signature element of the home. "This is one of my favourite features of the home," Malavika explained. "I think it's a very interesting colour to have on the floor, and it's very interesting to have the signature piece of your living room be the tiles." Inside, an intricate Tanjore painting, sourced directly from a craftsman in Tanjore by Malavika and her mother, adds a traditional yet elegant touch, setting a refined tone throughout the space.
Malabar Temple and Family Heirloom
A small temple, reminiscent of Kerala temples, occupies a corner of the living room and was the first area planned in the home. Adjacent to it hangs an intricately carved brass lamp, known as a 'Vilakku,' which has been a family heirloom for nearly 15 years. This piece contributes a sense of reverence and continuity, honoring the family's cultural heritage and spiritual practices.
Greenery and Morning Routine
Malavika cherishes starting her mornings surrounded by greenery, a feature abundant in her home with three balconies filled with plants acquired from travels across India. "I love starting my morning by looking at a lot of greenery, and we have a lot of that in my house," she shared. While her parents manage the plant care, Malavika admits to lacking a green thumb. Spending time on the balcony forms a crucial part of her daily routine, offering a peaceful retreat in the otherwise crowded Mumbai environment.
Recent Emotional Month and Mumbai Moments
Recently, Malavika took to Instagram to reflect on her experiences, describing March as a mixed bag. "The highlight was filming for 'Pocket Novel' and being directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja," she posted. "Unarguably, one of the finest filmmakers of our generation. Watching his process, being guided and shaped by him, has been one of the most special creative experiences in my career so far." She spent most of the month in Chennai for the shoot, grappling with loneliness upon returning to an empty room after long days.
Her family's visit provided a respite, with outings to temples in Chennai and Mahabalipuram and sampling local food. "Especially since my grandmother visited as well, which she rarely does," she added. Back in Mumbai, a sunset boat ride reignited her affection for the city. "The sky was breathtaking, the ocean air healing, and the waves so soothing. That evening, along with having missed home terribly, made me fall in love with Mumbai a little more."
