Manasa Varanasi's Multifaceted Journey: Engineering, Pageantry, and Acting
Reinvention has been a constant theme throughout Manasa Varanasi's remarkable career path. She has successfully transitioned from a software engineer to a beauty pageant winner, and now, she is making significant strides as a professional actress. Since the release of the romantic drama Couple Friendly last month, her acting career has accelerated into a new phase of momentum and opportunity.
Currently Filming Tamil Debut with Sasikumar in Chennai
Currently, Manasa is actively filming her Tamil debut alongside acclaimed actor Sasikumar in Chennai. In an exclusive interview, the actress opens up about the valuable lessons learned from her recent hit film, the process of finding her authentic voice as a performer, and her exciting leap into the broader cinematic landscape of South Indian cinema.
Facing Fears and Embracing Transitions
Reflecting on her unique journey from the tech industry to pageantry and then to acting, Manasa shares, "It has been quite an extraordinary journey for me. Before becoming a beauty queen, I worked as a software engineer in a traditional 9-5 job for two full years, so that initial shift represented a major transformation in my personal and professional identity. Subsequently, I had to move beyond that identity once again to transition fully into the world of acting. That second shift has been a significant and ongoing process in itself. However, I genuinely believe that's what life is truly about — adventure, seeking new experiences, continuously exploring who we are, and having the courage to take calculated risks and chances."
She acknowledges that every major transition in her life has been accompanied by its own share of fear and uncertainty. "But over time, I've learned that it's fundamentally about facing my fears directly and consciously choosing to move forward regardless. I made the deliberate choice to take those risks and see where they would lead me. I consistently remind myself that it's perfectly okay and that I possess the capability to handle whatever challenges come my way," she adds with conviction.
Engineering Days and Early Cinematic Influences
Cinema became a much more integral part of her life after she relocated to Hyderabad from Malaysia. "I grew up in Malaysia and spent approximately ten years of my schooling there. During that period, the only Telugu films typically screened in theaters were those starring Mahesh Babu garu and Pawan Kalyan garu. Consequently, most of my earliest and most cherished movie memories are intimately connected to watching their iconic films. It was only after I moved to Hyderabad to pursue my engineering degree that my movie-watching culture truly expanded and diversified. Making new friends, occasionally bunking classes, and going to the theaters together — that's when I genuinely began exploring films more actively and passionately," she recalls fondly.
The Impact of 'Couple Friendly' and the Mithra Character
Her role as an unemployed software engineer in Couple Friendly served as a crucial test and a defining moment in her acting career. "I wanted to fully embody my character without letting any trace of the beauty queen persona of Manasa come through," she explains. The project was filmed in a guerrilla-style manner in Chennai, involving shooting on authentic locations like railway platforms and local tea shops with a minimal crew. "The audience didn't just passively watch my character, Mithra; they actively welcomed her into their hearts. That experience profoundly reminded me to live fully in the present moment and to simply be authentic in my performance." While she is naturally drawn to nuanced, character-driven roles, she is also genuinely excited about the potential of commercial-scale cinema. "Telugu cinema offers immense space to entertain audiences on a larger, more spectacular canvas, and I would absolutely love to be an integral part of that vibrant tradition," she adds enthusiastically.
Future Projects and Methodical Approach
"Currently, I'm diligently filming my next Tamil project with Sasikumar in Chennai, and I've been working intensively on improving my Tamil language skills. I'm also in active discussions for a few promising Telugu scripts, but I firmly believe in taking one careful step at a time to ensure I can do complete justice to every role I ultimately take on," Manasa states regarding her upcoming ventures.
Full Circle: From Audience Member to Leading Actress
From watching films from the balcony seats in Hyderabad theaters to now portraying lead roles on the big screen, her relationship with cinema has beautifully come full circle. "Acting has allowed me to step out of conventional moulds, to become more expressive and vulnerable, and to fully embrace a sense of creative freedom," she says, concluding the interview on a reflective and optimistic note.
