Manoj Bajpayee's 'Ghooskhor Pandat' to Undergo Title Change After Public Outcry
In a significant development, the makers of Manoj Bajpayee and Neeraj Pandey's upcoming Netflix film, Ghooskhor Pandat, have decided to rename the project following widespread backlash over its title. The decision was formally communicated to the Delhi High Court, where a writ petition had been filed seeking to halt the film's release due to concerns that the title and promotional content were defamatory and could inflame communal sensitivities.
Controversy Erupts Over Allegedly Offensive Title
The film, a fictional cop drama, has been embroiled in controversy since its teaser release, with critics labeling the title as offensive and communally insensitive. The outrage prompted the removal of all promotional materials from online platforms. A police complaint was also registered at Lucknow's Hazratganj police station, accusing the filmmakers of attempting to spread social discord and hurt religious and caste sentiments by associating the term "Pandat" with corruption.
Makers Respond to Backlash and Public Sentiment
Director Neeraj Pandey issued a statement acknowledging that the title had hurt some viewers, emphasizing that the film is a fictional story focused on an individual's actions and does not target any community. He announced the temporary takedown of promotional materials to allow audiences to experience the film in its full context. Manoj Bajpayee echoed these sentiments on social media, expressing respect for public concerns and highlighting the filmmakers' seriousness in addressing the issue.
Protests and Industry Reactions Intensify
Despite these efforts, protests have escalated across cities. In Bhopal, members of the Akhil Bhartiya Brahmin Samaj demonstrated with placards demanding action against the filmmakers and Netflix. In Prayagraj, the Rashtriya Parshuram Sena burnt effigies of Pandey and Bajpayee. Additionally, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) issued a strong statement condemning the title, warning that it could disrupt social harmony and threatening to distance its members from future projects by the producer if corrective measures were not taken.
Legal and Social Implications of the Title Change
The title change reflects a growing sensitivity in the entertainment industry to public sentiment and legal pressures. As the makers work on rebranding the film, this case underscores the delicate balance between creative expression and social responsibility in Bollywood and streaming platforms like Netflix.
